Super humbled to play the legendary PBD, and particularly poignant as it was the day before I exited these Australian shores. Opening the main floor on such a stunning day called for something special, speaking to the gorgeous bush we enjoy Downunder. The 90 minutes that ensued was one of melodica, depth, reflection and melancholy as I say farewell for the foreseeable future.

UH - TANGO (MOONLIGHT SIDE) - BAR MIX

A composition for melodica and live-electronics by Karlheinz Essl. It was commissioned by the Non-Piano/Toy Piano Weekend and premiered by Steven Tanoto on November 22, 2025 at Resonanzraum St. Pauli in Hamburg. Recorded and produced by Karlheinz Essl.

If we think of the organ as a giant mountain, then we can think of the melodica as a kind of shrunken-down version of that - a tump.

In my piece, this weak and humble instrument is given a powerful voice so that it can match with her great ancestor, the organ. The play on a melodica is manipulated by a sophisticated computer program (written in Max) that expands the sound in many dimensions. It is controlled by the player while performing the meticulously notated score. However, the musical result is not just an "orgified" version of the melodica. It is full of microtonal deviations, harmonic shifts and glissandi that are difficult to achieve on an organ. In a mesmerising interaction between the melodica, the performer and the computer software, we can listen to the mysteries of the reeds...

In a certain sense, the piece can be heard as a parable, telling the story of weakness and strength through the language of sound.

No es un bolero tradicional cubano o latinoamericano, ni el famoso Bolero de Maurice Ravel.

El autor de "A ma femme" es Charles Aznavour. El estilo de la canción es una balada melancólica, característica de Aznavour, con una letra que reflexiona sobre el paso del tiempo y la evolución de una relación a través de los años. 
La canción es una balada con un tono nostálgico, que evoca recuerdos y sentimientos de manera emotiva.

Situées entre rêve et réalité, nées pour la plupart au cours d'un voyage en van de six mois, au coeur du marché au poisson de ma petite tribu foisonnante d'émotions, mes chansons, intégrées dans le livre audio, sont également des histoires en partage.
Comédienne, clown, chanteuse et musicienne "cousue main", j'évolue dans des espaces de création liés à l'oralité, la transmission, le tissage de lien entre les êtres et les mondes. 
Ma voix tend des fils entre ombre et lumière, silence et résonance, partant de l'intime pour rejoindre l'universel dans une sorte de récit de voyage initiatique. 
Avec Ako, mon compagnon, sa guitare, mon ukulélé, nos voix, un accordéon et une tripotée d'instruments insolites, nous voilà partis pour un laboratoire sonore et vibratoire. 
En quête de sens et d'essence, entre paysages intérieurs et extérieurs, là où le dehors et le dedans se mélangent, nous déployons le tapis rouge du temps pour vous emmener à travers les lézardes cosmiques, au coeur de nos transmutations alchimiques. 
Une exploration sensorielle du son un peu de bric et de broc mais en accordage avec ce qui se vit pour faire vibrer ce qui ne se dit pas toujours avec des mots. 
Organique, vulnérable, authentique, à corps et à cris, à coeurs et à voix nus, le voyage continue...

Co-owner of Melodica (Deep & progressive collective based in Madrid)

Born 1960 in Vienna. Austrian composer, improviser and performer. He studied composition with Friedrich Cerha and musicology in Vienna. Besides writing experimental instrumental music, he performs on his own electronic instrument m@ze°2, develops software environments for computer-aided composition and creates generative sound and video environments. Since 2007 professor of composition for electro-acoustic and experimental music at the University of Music in Vienna.

Karlheinz Essl performs on a laptop computer that he has transformed into a live electronic musical instrument. The result is exciting and musical. You just won't hear these sounds anywhere else. He performs solo and in duets and trios, responding with sensitivity to fellow musicians, producing fascinating sound transformations, creating spontaneous surprises, and moving quickly from loops to cacophony to tiny clips of vocal sounds to all kinds of textures and ideas. Hello! I'm from France and have been living in Edinburgh since September 2013. I play the guitar, keys, melodica and glockenspiel. After I have composed the tracks you can listen here between 2002-2006, I now write folk/rock or lullaby songs. I often perform in many bars and pubs in Scotland... and of course any other country. My first EP "The Mermaid Land" was released on 26th April 2016. Cheers!
