MERCY MEDITATION

Inspired by the movie "The Mauritanian" about (surprise, surprise) American military and governmental injustice at Guantánamo Bay. 

"Some say it’s just the cost of war…
But we’re here to tell the story,
From the islands to the mainland,
From the cell to the open sky…
Truth will rise up.”

Down in the bay they call Guantánamo,
Sun beat down where no free wind blow,
Brother Qahtani, forty-eight nights no sleep,
Chained to the floor, pain cut deep.
Rumsfeld sign with a smile and a pen,
Said “make them break,” again and again,
But a broken soul don’t bring no peace,
Only a mind and body where the hate increase.

Truth rise up, like the morning sun,
No more chains, the healing’s begun,
Even if you fear, even if you fight,
Mercy shine stronger than the darkest night.
Truth rise up, you can feel it sway,
Every man’s pain will return someday,
What we sow in the heart, that’s what we reap,
And the world can’t rest while the past still weeps.

Bybee and Yoo twist the law for them,
Dogs in the room, cold wind blow,
Strip you bare so the shame pit grow.
But a man in the ground will rise with a song,
You can’t kill the truth, it lives too long,
Every beating hand leaves a mark on the giver,
Every poisoned well taints the taker’s river.

Mercy

Raised in Concrete Washington, I learned to play the guitar when I was 12 years old.  We had a music teacher by the name of Daryl Cooper who was like my older brother.  He started a guitar class and I couldn't wait to be in it.  By the 2nd or 3rd week I had probably outgrown the class but I enjoyed every minute of it.  I was in his band by the time I was 14 playing dances all over Western Washington.  I was awarded the National Choral Award Scholarship my senior year of high school.  This goes to one student in the United States.  I wasn't smart enough to use it.  I joined the United States Navy in 1979 and stayed for almost 22 years.  During that time I was a submariner and eventually the pilot of a small submersible (DSV3 Turtle) that would dive to 10,000 feet deep.  I was in bands playing guitar and singing throughout my military career.  We actually had a couple songs play on DC101 in the 80's.  Now in my 60's, I'm able to relax and write songs without any pressure or dreams of grandeur.  I like the songs I write and hope you like them too.

Praying With The Eyes is a ministry of Family of Christ Lutheran Church in Colorado Springs which combines the beauty of God's Word with the beauty of his creation.

I am a lyricist, author, and consciousness-explorer attempting to create songs that transcend genres, bridge worlds, empower individuals, illuminate systems of oppression, and advocate for the disenfranchised.

I have roots in psychiatric care, international aid, and crisis response. My songs are born from my meditation, breathwork, psychedelic experiences, my pain, and my joy.
