The god-fearing character in this song decides to leave his family to start over somewhere else, in the sacred name of the lord, of course. Musically, I wasn't really sure what to do. I was playing around with a riff that kind of gave me Queens of the Stone Age vibes and just went with it. I dusted off the JCM 900 for one of the rhythm guitar tracks, just for fun. Lacking a fuzz box, a little treatment with the boogex plugin helped too!

I wrote this song to capture the essence of moving on from a bad relationship. It hurts at first, but as you pick up and discard the pieces, you realize that you've lost the person you used to be; that's when the healing can begin.

A trick of the Light

I recently learned that Carol Of The Bells, written by Mykola Leontovych, was originally called "Shchedryk". He based the piece on a Ukranian folk chant about the coming New Year. In pre-Christian Ukraine, this was in April. It's about a swallow flying into a household to proclaim the bountiful year coming up. (Wikipedia)

So with this new information, I wish that you have a bountiful new year, and that the woes of 2020 fade into the past.

All instruments are played and recorded by me, and I used the choral score for the beginning and end sections. The middle section is derived from the melodic minor mode ascending in the choral score ("Ring...Christmas Bells").

In August 2022 Samuel sent me a guitar melody and a "chuga-chuga" heavy guitar part via Guitar Pro. Guitar Pro serves as a sketch pad for us to work on together, to share ideas. I liked the themes he had come up with and proceeded to develop them in a neoclassical style through variations and different keys. It was a lot of fun! Those key changes were a killer though when it came time to record, because Samuel had open strings in his parts and had to retune for parts in C# minor, C minor, D# minor.
