Sounds from a more than fifty-year-old ferry ride through the Croatian islands. This ship truly has a soul—big, loud, and aged. Its entrance hatch, when opened, reveals the entire front of the vessel. Deep horns resonate from this ferry and smaller ships nearby. As the ship starts, waves crash against its body, recorded from the deck. I used two Sennheiser MKH8020 microphones, spaced apart, with a Zoom F3 recorder.

Other recordings were made in the Rijeka shipyard, capturing the heavy metalwork—machines, moving metal parts, distant seagulls, and workers talking. Near the microphones, small birds were chirping. These were recorded with Sennheiser MKH40 microphones and a Zoom F6 recorder.

We follow the rise of civilization and of powerful empires in West Africa before the slave tade, based upon iron-working and the traffic in gold and salt across the Sahara, followed by the spread of wealth and power southward, towards the gold fields and the tropical forests, and finally the reverberating impacts of the arrival of Portuguese traders on the coast, which paved the way for the rise of the Atlantic slave trade.
