Several years ago, a great film music composer, Lorne Balfe, posted one of his Cubase projects online. This is my version, which started with his Cubase project. No copyright infringement intended. This was done solely for educational purposes and thus it falls under the fair copyright act law. This is, of course, not for sale.

With the exception of the synths section, which contains only presets from Omnisphere, I had to replace all the instruments in the rest of the tracks, because he did this in 2016 or 2017 and he had used several instruments under Kontakt 5, which only works in the Intel version of Macs. Also, he had used a lot of libraries that I didn't have and it would've been impossible for me to buy, as they would've cost thousands of dollars or euros and I had plenty of good libraries already. 

However, replacing most of the instruments was only part of the fun, because I had to replace them with my own libraries, and make the whole thing sound as close as possible to the original. For that, I ripped the CD to my Mac (one of my favorite film scores), and aligned it with his project. I was really glad to realize that once I synced it, everything aligned perfectly, as if this was the final project he had used for the album.

Whether or not this is the actual project he used I don't know for sure, but it gave me a great learning opportunity. Going track by track, assigning different instruments in my libraries and listening to them to get as close as possible to the original. Then I had even more fun and duplicated several tracks, sometimes entire sections, and loaded different libraries into those as well. I also added a bass guitar because, why not?

Because MOD and EXP are never the same for each library out there, even libraries from the same publisher, I had to edit most of those too, as well as volume automation that Lorne set but didn't work the same with vastly different VSTis, even if it was the same actual instrument I was trying to replicate. But violins in Cinesamples are not going to sound the same as those in Spitfire libraries, Eastwest, Orchestral Tools, Cinematic Studio Series and so on. So while Lorne had programmed those perfectly with Spitfire libraries mostly, once replaced with other libraries, I needed to do a lot of MIDI programming, and that was a lot of fun, as well as a great learning experience. I wish there were more composers that offer online their projects like he does, because it's an invaluable tool for composers that are just getting started like me and so many others.
