In this episode of "Talking MEWShop," the team gets the opportunity to speak with four-time Emmy-winning Editor Stephanie Filo, ACE. Stephanie recounts how she was a dancer who transitioned to film editing after being inspired by the movie 'Seven'. She talks about her start in the industry as a night Assistant Editor. At Fancy Film, she developed her technical skills and received mentorship. She discusses collaborating post-Covid, as well as her work and development as an artist in post-production.


Stephanie Filo, ACE is a four-time Emmy, as well as Peabody and ACE Eddie Award-winning Film/Television Editor and activist based in Los Angeles, CA, and Sierra Leone, West Africa. She serves on the board for Girls Empowerment Sierra Leone, a social impact and feminist-based organization for Sierra Leonean girls aged 11-16. She is one of the co-founders of End Ebola Now, an organization created in 2014 to spread accurate information and awareness about the Ebola Virus and its impact through artistic community activism.

Aside from editing television and film, Stephanie spends much of her spare time producing and editing social action campaigns and documentaries, primarily focused on the rights of women and girls worldwide. Some of her notable campaigns include her work with the United Nations, the International Labour Organization, and the Obama White House Task Force's It's On Us campaign to combat campus sexual assault. Her charitable work has been featured in Forbes Magazine, Entertainment Tonight, Telegraph UK, Yahoo, Al Jazeera, XWhy Magazine, and various others. Her work on the news documentary series "Mental State" earned her an Emmy nomination for the episode "Aging Out" about youth aging out of the American foster care system. She earned an Emmy win for her editing on the Mental State episode "Separated" which covered ICE deportations, making herself and Nzinga Blake the first Sierra Leonean women to ever win an Emmy award. In 2021, she won a Primetime Emmy award for her work on HBO's "A Black Lady Sketch Show", making her team the first all-Women of Color editing team to take home the award for Outstanding Picture Editing for Variety Programming. In 2022, she made history again as a member of the first all-black editing team to be nominated for and win both an Emmy and an ACE Eddie for "A Black Lady Sketch Show". Most recently in 2023, she has made history again, as the first Picture Editor and first Black editor to ever be Emmy nominated for 3 different series at the same time.

In Episode 11 of "Talking MEWShop," the MEWShop team speaks with Six Week Alumni and "Emily in Paris" Editor Veronica Rutledge. Veronica talks about how she juggled taking MEWshop's, Six Week Intensive Workshop during the day and night work as an assistant Editor during her time taking the class. She recalls benefiting from Manhattan Edit Workshop's knowledge and networking opportunities. Veronica speaks on how the workshop fosters collaboration and teaches essential editing techniques. She notes how networking proves vital for career growth, with former students helping each other find jobs. Veronica also talks about her career journey as she is now working as an Editor on the hit Netflix show "Emily in Paris."

Veronica Rutledge is a Brooklyn-based filmmaker, known for her editing work on the award-winning Hulu series, "Ramy", and the Emmy-nominated series, "Emily in Paris". Her feature editing work includes the romantic comedy, “At Midnight” (Paramount+), starring Diego Boneta, Monica Barbaro, and Anders Holm. As an assistant editor, she worked on the award-winning Showtime series, “The Affair'', and New Line Cinema’s “Isn’t it Romantic”, starring Rebel Wilson.

Her documentary short, “A Place on the Edge of Breath” an intimate and lyrical story about gender expression, was selected for the inaugural IF/Then x Hulu Documentary Lab and was an official selection at the New Orleans Film Festival, Montclair Film Festival, and Bushwick Film Festival, where it won best Documentary Short. She holds an MFA from the Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema (Brooklyn College).

In Episode 12 of Talking MEWShop, the MEW crew talks with Blackmagic Design Director of Sales Operation Bob Caniglia. Bob discusses his early production experiences and preferences for post-production. They talk about advice for changing careers and the significance of editing education. They also highlight technological advancements, the popularity of Resolve classes at MEWShop, and the growth of Blackmagic while reflecting on the impact of technology on the film industry and the evolution from analog to digital processes.

Bob Caniglia began working in the film and television industry in 1985 as a part-time camera operator and editor on industrial videos. Bob finished school at night while working full-time as a commercial producer/director at a local CBS affiliate. Eventually, Bob found himself in L.A. as an editor for The Disney Channel and 525 Post Production, later working on music videos for Prince, Madonna, and Michael Jackson. Bob also helped Gore Verbinski with his director demo reel, telling him that he would be a feature film director someday.

Leveraging his real-world industry experience, Bob made the transition to working with a variety of production and post-production manufacturers, including Panasonic, Quantel, Snell, DaVinci Systems, and Blackmagic Design, where he currently holds the position of Director of Sales Operations.

Ever the creative type, Bob is a professional comedian performing around the world under the stage name Bobby Zee. He also has a love for karaoke that just won't quit.

Behind the Lens: A Conversation About the Work and Vision of Cinematographer Dean Cundey, ASC

Panelist: Dean Cundey, ASC (Jurassic Park, Halloween, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Back to the Future, Apollo 13)

Cinematographer Dean Cundey, ASC, earned an Oscar nomination as well as a BAFTA nomination for his work with Robert Zemeckis on "Who Framed Roger Rabbit." Additional collaborations with Zemeckis include "Romancing the Stone," all three "Back to the Future" features and "Death Becomes Her." Cundey first attracted attention in 1978, when he and John Carpenter collaborated on the production of "Halloween." Their subsequent collaborations included "The Fog," "Escape from New York," "The Thing," and "Big Trouble in Little China."  He received Outstanding Achievement Award nominations from the American Society of Cinematographers for "Hook" and "Apollo 13," the latter also receiving a BAFTA nomination.  

His body of work spans a great variety of genres and includes the films "Crazy Kind of Love," "Walking With the Enemy," "Freedom," "The Girl in the Photographs," "Diablo," "Slamma Jamma," "Jurassic Park," "The Flintstones", "Looney Toons: Back in Action," "Garfield I & II," "Sakura – The Blue Eyed Samurai," "Whisper," and "Jack and Jill." He also collaborated with producer Nancy Meyers when she directed The "Parent Trap", then followed by "What Women Want" and "The Holiday." In addition, he has directed occasional narrative films and numerous commercials.

Sean Albertson's journey into the world of entertainment began amidst the vibrant arts scene of New York City. Born into a family deeply rooted in the entertainment industry—his father a versatile musician and film editor, and his mother a seasoned Production Manager and Assistant Director—Sean's earliest experiences revolved around music, acting, and the magic of filmmaking. As a young performer, he graced both stage and screen, even landing a role as an extra in the Academy Award-winning film, "Kramer vs. Kramer." Alongside his passion for performance, Sean found his rhythm in music, particularly drawn to percussion and vocals, which he honed while playing with various bands.

However, it was the transformative power of storytelling through film editing that ultimately captured Sean's imagination. Embracing his innate creativity and inherited talents, he transitioned seamlessly into the world of film post-production. With an insatiable appetite for learning and a commitment to mastering his craft, Sean has continually evolved as a storyteller, expanding his repertoire to include writing, producing, and harboring aspirations for directing.

With over three decades of experience in filmmaking, Sean's career boasts an impressive portfolio of more than 70 credits across diverse mediums. From compelling television movies and acclaimed series to blockbuster feature films and innovative mobile content, his work reflects a deep understanding of narrative structure and an unwavering dedication to cinematic excellence. Notable credits include contributions to iconic films such as "Warrior," "Rocky Balboa," "Rambo IV," "Truth or Dare," and “Imaginary," as well as acclaimed television shows like "E-Ring," "Cold Case," "Heroes," and "The Vampire Diaries."
