32: Light Dinner Conversation

This is another recording from 10 years ago. The song is a Daniel Lanois cover called "Fire". After Biloxi, the first song I attempted, this one was mostly about trying to get a compelling vocal performance. I can sing but I don't have a great instrument in the way that a truly great singer does. I won't really get into that limitation but I get the job done on this one. It was hard, the singing is constant and I was surprised to see upon opening the project years later that there were no edits. In other words all the performances are whole from beginning to end. I can hear a few places where the guitars step on each other and I backed off the electric to make way for the acoustic.

I'm fairly certain I recorded the electric guitar that is heard at the very beginning as the base track. I probably intended to re-record that part but it was the correct arrangement and with decent timing. I actually think it was a first take and the delay was from a pedal in front of the amp. The reason I think it was a first take is because it is a buzzy, rattly mess. I think once the other tracks were on there I was either too tired to care or the poor playing added something that worked. Either way, it's a good reason to consider a better take might be waiting on the next pass. Second was P-bass then acoustic guitar. 

Once those were done I sang the vocal. It is one whole take and I think I probably did it three or four times but I don't really have a way to tell very easily. What I do remember was really feeling like I needed to ramp up the expression and daring in the transitions from one part of my range to the next. There's a fair amount of strong, full voiced singing right into soft falsetto throughout the song. I think I might have done this after a band rehearsal because I can hear a certain "zipper" quality to my voice in places that I relate to fatigue. I think the best part of my performance is the very ending where I soften my voice out to a natural fade. That was performed and not edited. 

As an engineer and producer I find that vocal performances are often over or under sung. The voice acting commitment cannot be overlooked. I certainly wish I was a better singer but I do feel like I escalated my performance from the Biloxi example.

Oh yeah, the lead guitar was a borrowed Les Paul with burst-buckers through a 57 deluxe. At the time I had 3 other LP's in my studio but all with different pickups. I really liked the ones in my friend's guitar and it made the take. I think the rhythm guitar is my Guild M75 through my Super Reverb. The bass is a 59-P with flatwound strings. This was all recorded using the preamps in my Tascam DM24. The bass was DI into the board. I suspect the acoustic was recorded with a C1000 or possibly a 414. The electric guitars and vocals were all using a Grundig microphone with the same capsule as a Sennheiser MD409. I'm not 100% sure about that but I think that's about the time those mic's came into my life. One of them became a favorite vocal mic until my puppy knocked it over in a boom stand. It cracked the capsule in impact. I've never been able to replace that mic and have tried several times.

Producing and recording for other artists leaves me unable to share much if any of what I'm working on most of the time. The recordings I can share are mostly personal experiments to learn a microphone or productions technique. The first recordings I will be sharing are from nearly 10 years ago before I was really doing any productions for anyone else. Along the way there have a been a few one-off projects for songwriters where I did all the playing and sometimes singing that I might share as well.
