I remember being in high school when someone asked me what kind of music I liked.  Normally, this would be difficult to answer concisely--I have start listing genres and subgenres and microgenres, just to describe by already eclectic tastes (which would only grow more eclectic as I got older)...but THIS time, I smiled and said "I like songs you can dance to with sad lyrics."  

Can you think of a better description for pop/new wave/synth pop/post punk/house/dance music?  

That is the lead that I followed today--though, I kept the vocals simple...so, I guess your mileage may vary as to how sad they are...  

I lowered the tempo a bit from some of my more recent dance-y efforts.  118bpm USED to be where a lot of the stuff I used to dj, when I worked Top 40 clubs, would fall to...but when I moved into dj'ing house/techno/etc, that bumped up at least 10bpm for the "average tempo."  

People CAN dance to tracks at this tempo--I've done.  Hell, I was doing it while making this track (don't picture me doing so--especially if the only clue you have as to what I look like is from YESTERDAY'S Interbay track (again, that is NOT me...that is AI interpretation of what I might look when I'm MUCH OLDER than I am.)  

Speaking of thumbnails, my first thought for today's track was of a heart made in ice (ice being brittle, easily broken)...but I didn't like any that I came across.  Instead, I started looking for movie images of sad or brokenhearted characters.  

Doing so let me know that I do have a tendency to crush on attractive women with big eyes (as I looked through photos of Winona Ryder, Helena Bonham Carter, Kate Winslet, Jennifer Connelly, Scarlett Johannson, Holly Hunter, Anna Pacquin, Ione Skye, Sherilyn Fenn, Jenny Slate, Carol Kane, Mary Beth Hurt, Diane Franklin, Lea Thompson, Elizabeth Taylor, etc. etc. etc., before deciding on this picture of Hope Davis.)    

(As a matter of fact, it might have taken me longer to pick out a thumbnail image today than it took to make the track I'm posting...though that could be hyperbole...)

I realized that I didn't want a picture of someone being sad...or broken hearted...I wanted a picture of someone on the VERGE of being brokenhearted, because they have...an easily broken (or brittle) heart.  

Some of you reading this might have parents who might recognize the vocal snippets here.  (Some of you may have GRANDPARENTS who might recognize them, but I don't want to think about that--seriously, that picture from yesterday has got me all messed up. ;) )  

I like this track because it isn't minimal but it isn't overstuffed either--it is what it is and it does what it does...and I should remember that THAT is enough.  (I admit that I sometimes overcomplicate things because I worry that what I've made is too simple--so, I keep adding things...until I realize that I probably don't need a third countermelody, but, by then, I'm already pot committed.
