Writer, activist and journalist Joan Smith has worked for years to raise awareness of violence against women and girls, and has been instrumental in bringing the innate misogyny of the police to public attention. Unfortunately, She Was a Nymphomaniac reinterprets the bloody, violent story of twenty-three women closely associated with the Julio-Claudian emperors of Rome. Fewer than half a dozen of them can be said with any confidence to have died of natural causes.

These were the wives, mothers and daughters of the emperors from Augustus to Nero, via their ‘mad’ relative Caligula. They were the most privileged women of their time, but their lives were overshadowed, dominated and controlled by these men. Raped, killed, ripped apart from their children and mostly airbrushed from history, Joan Smith brings their extraordinary and tragic stories back into focus. There are no nymphomaniacs here.

Instead, the book pieces together the human stories, showing how they struggled for control of their lives at a time when both the law and culture were stacked against them. These women shared in a spirited, inspiring and sometimes reckless resistance to male authority.

Smith brings to this history not only a fresh interpretation of the original texts but also an understanding of what we know now about the mechanics of domestic abuse. The way these women have been misrepresented for two thousand years speaks volumes not just about ancient misogyny but the origin and persistence of attitudes that continue to blight women’s lives today.

Mega-controversial comedian Andrew Clay Silverstein got his big break on Rodney Dangerfield’s 1988 HBO special and soon thereafter was playing arenas. His comedy album The Diceman Cometh went gold and following a live set on MTV, he was banned from that network. His next album, The Day the Laughter Died, went gold in seven weeks, and eventually went platinum. He then hosted the most controversial episode of SNL ever which led to cast boycotts and huge controversy. 1990 saw the release of this film, earning the infamous Golden Raspberry for the worst film of the year and Clay the worst actor of the year. The men featured in the videos are also AI-generated, responding with crude or sexist remarks to staged bystanders who react with laughter or shock, which only intensifies the sexist atmosphere. 🎥✨🧠

Why is this important? These AI-created clips are saturating social media by the millions and gaining viral popularity because the platforms’ algorithms favor provocative and engaging content. What appears to be harmless entertainment is, in fact, a sophisticated and low-cost AI content factory churning out sexist narratives that normalize misogyny. Cybersecurity experts like those at GetReal Security confirm that these visuals are so realistic that it becomes nearly impossible to tell what’s real and what’s AI-generated, creating a serious challenge for digital truth and trust. 🔥📲⚠️

Not long ago, deepfakes and synthetic media were mostly seen as tech novelties or experimental tools. Now, they have been weaponized—not just for pranks or trolling but to reinforce harmful stereotypes and deepen societal biases. These videos make public what some might have only whispered in private, thereby normalizing attitudes that cause real harm to people in everyday life. 💻🚫👎

So, what can we do about it? Shailendra offers a crucial bonus tip: whenever you encounter content that seems suspicious or raises doubts, take a moment to question its authenticity. Look for telltale signs of AI generation such as unnatural eye movements, overly perfect lighting, or visuals that seem too polished. Supporting platforms and tools that encourage digital literacy and fact-checking is essential because awareness is our strongest defense against misinformation and manipulation. 🕵️‍♂️🔍✅

How did we become disenfranchised from our voices? Why do so many of us stop singing and lose trust with our voices? 

This first episode breaks down how colonial narratives of the sex/gender binary, as well as Eurocentric vocal practices, tarnish many people’s relationship to their voice. The podcast focuses on how queer people, especially trans and gender non-conforming folks, are disproportionately excluded from the rigidity of many vocal spaces. Through interviews, soundscapes and meditations, this episode offers routes to decolonising the voice outside of whiteness, elitism and ableism in order to find more embodied states of being.

Ideologically we were a part of USSR therefore we are really different. This is an important fact I’d like to underline and why I am much different from western feminists. I lived in NYC for almost 5 years and met some feminists there, but over all American feminism disappointed me a lot. I do admire feminists who live or teach in the US but they are either European or African or of African descent as Angela Davis. I was introduced to the real feminism in NYC by a French stripper roommate and others, and I’m so grateful for that.
