Electronic ConnectFM 66: Tracks of the Month

 A river drifts through reverie, not to arrive, but to linger.

Its waters are woven from memory and mist, each ripple a forgotten thought, each bend a breath of silence. In this sonic landscape, time loses its urgency, replaced by the gentle current of introspection.

The piano speaks in droplets — soft syllables of dawn falling onto the surface of time. It is the heartbeat of a morning that hasn't quite broken, delicate and hesitant. Against this backdrop, the clarinet sighs like wind through unopened letters, carrying secrets that were never meant to be told aloud.

From the depths, the cello hums from beneath the stream, a grounding force, a voice that never needed words to convey the weight of history. Above it all, the oboe rises like fog, hovering between what was and what might have been, creating a texture that feels almost touchable.

This music does not move linearly — it dreams. It does not end with a cadence — it dissolves into the ether. And in its dissolving, silence echoes — not loudly, but eternally.

“Art, directly or indirectly, is the expression of a conscious or unconscious metaphysical concern, and this is what makes it both valuable and depreciable, indispensable and superfluous. Its content is in this sense unclassifiable - whereas in today's world everything is classified, evaluated and rated. We live in paradoxical societies, of anxiety, of occult forces and at the same time of ingenuity and aesthetic brilliance. In parallel with societal movements that refuse or question classical models, such as those of gender, patriarchy and social categories, art today is retreating from normative ideas and feeding on a new rational and moral freshness.
The subtle influence of these societal transformations engages contemporary musical research towards a dissolution of fixed models, while at the same time drawing inspiration from them. The beauty and strength of new ideas is to use the wealth of possibilities and at the same time to escape from them. By amplifying reality through non-utilitarian works and activity, music makes us not understand it, but touch it. It is the profound expression of the mystery that defines our human condition and not a commodity to be bought and sold in the sense of the world of evaluation and classification. The pieces and interview excerpts chosen for this podcast reflect this paradoxical world that is both disturbing and exhilarating. They echo the density of the world with its violence, its decay, its fragility, but also its power, its ingenuity and its beauty. The overcoming of genres as well as the reappropriation of heterogeneous elements from classical music, jazz, film music, folk music, recall the complex thickness of the world through musical reminiscences belonging to the collective memory that awaken strange connections. A musical universe that touches the real in its raw state.”

As Wolf Hagen, I compose music for the silence between the notes. Drawing from the tradition of great masters like Bach and Pachelbel, I find inspiration to weave baroque clarity with the emotional complexity of our time.
The interplay of piano and cello stands at the heart of my work – two voices that complement, challenge, and exist in harmonic tension with each other. I add orchestral elements with care, never to dominate, but to open spaces: for reflection, for stillness, for those precious moments of pause.
My compositions are not statements, but invitations – to discover hidden emotions, to find quiet in a noisy world.

In 1998, pianist and composer Bruno Sanfilippo, along with his wife Ximena Contreras, established their own record label, ad21, as a haven for their creative expression. Since then, ad21 has released over 30 solo and collaborative albums in digital and physical formats, solidifying its position as a cornerstone of the neoclassical music scene.
In 2024, ad21 embarked on an ambitious new venture by opening its doors to pianists worldwide, broadening its platform and artistic outreach. Collaborating with Javier Guglielmi, ad21 aims to foster a record label specializing in neoclassical music, with a particular focus on solo piano performances.
Their vision for ad21 is to create a nurturing environment where artists can discover a supportive community and access the resources necessary to maximize their musical potential.
