I’ve recently been on a huge garage kick and have been scooping up tons of UK garage from it’s golden age in the late 90s and early 00s. For those unfamiliar, UK Garage is a style of music that descended from house and classic four on the floor beats. The drum patterns in garage music was what made it especially unique, with skipping kicks and shuffling hi-hats, and tempos usually in the 130-140 BPM range.

While garage music currently has no mainstream success, it’s recently been popular enough to spawn a new style of music: future garage. Future garage retains the beats of garage music, while shifting the atmosphere to a darker, isolated setting away from the dance floor.
Our friends over at the future bass and electronic bass label Square Harmony have recently released a compilation of future garage music titled “Deep Lane”. Among the artists featured are Delete, EPLP, Essáy, Fedbymachines, & Ghostek from the Night Shift Collective.

From top to bottom Square Harmony’s Deep Lane compilation is a lovely introduction to the atmospheric genre of future garage music. Each track showcases the unique talent of these fifteen different producers. I’ve been listening to this album for a while now, and each time it takes me somewhere new.

A lot of noise and dark soundscapes from Germany with an Buchla 200e, an eurorack modular, some really cool Metasonix and Zerosum Inertia tubes stuff, and a bit Ciat Lonbarde gear. During travelling the Teenage Engineering OP1 gets a lot of use, too!
