Frankie Dee - The Dancehall Beast Mixtape - Invasion Soundsystem

Fort Jesus, designed by Italian architect Giovanni Battista Cairati, was built on the coast of Mombasa from 1593 to 1596, which proved that Portugal successfully controlled the Indian Ocean trade in Swahili area for the first time. The Fort Jesus is full of crows, and their loud noises drown out the conversation of tourists.

The Crows in Fort Jesus

Mackinnon Market opened in 1914 and was named after the colonial governor of Kenya, Sir Henry Mackinnon, who officially opened it. Generations of Mombasa residents have been buying vegetables and spices here. There are more than 200 stalls in this market, most of which have been in the market for more than 50 years and have now been passed on to the younger generation. Walking into the market with a recorder in hand, vendors greeted me with Hello or Nihao. One heard that I am a Chinese, then took out a notebook to read the Chinese words he learned from his Chinese friend.

Mackinnon Market in Mombasa Old Town

Muslims account for more than 70% of the population in Mombasa Old Town, so there are various mosques, old and new, all over the town. Every day in the town, the Adhan will be heard, mixed with the buzzing sounds of motor vehicles on the busy streets, so that the whole town is bathed in a rich religious atmosphere.

The Adhan on the Busy Streets

Mombasa Old Town is the town of crows. Everywhere you go, you can hear their noise. They are the main part of the soundscape. This sound was recorded from a shady stone step leading from the Tulia Old Town Backpackers to the shore. The powerboat moored on the seaside suddenly started its motor.

The Town of Crows


There are few tourists on the Nyali Beach in Mombasa, but you can see beach camels looking for riders. The recorder sat on the sand with its tripod, avoiding the dirty seaweed washed up on the beach, facing the Indian Ocean and recording its breath. The wind is very strong, so it is difficult to isolate the friction of the wind in the recording.

Mani Schmah is a Franco-Gabonese music producer, beatmaker and the creator of Electropical — a vibrant fusion of electronic music and tropical rhythms. His sound blends rare samples, tribal percussion, organic textures and hypnotic grooves, offering a sonic journey across continents and eras.
A self-taught artist with a passion for digging and reworking, Mani started by flipping old funk, afro and bossa nova tracks into fresh and powerful edits. His remixes and original compositions quickly caught attention on social media, where he shares his creative process with humor and authenticity.
His breakout track "Figue de Guinée", a smooth and sunny bossa nova-inspired anthem, has surpassed 3 million streams on Spotify, becoming a defining piece of the Electropical movement.
With the album SAWASSA, Mani deepened the exploration - sampling vintage African songs from Meiway, DJ Arafat and Awilo Longomba, while showcasing traditional instruments like the Kenyan harp and the Bwiti bow from Gabon.
The result is a raw and colorful tribute to African heritage, blended with modern electronic vibes.
Driven by a desire to make people dance and connect, Mani has performed in bars, clubs and music events in Gabon, Israel and France, bringing his unique sound to the underground scene.
Now he keeps expanding the world of Electropical — a genre full of bass, soul and sun.
