A Whole New World (Aladdin's Disney)

Some preliminary ideas for thematic material for a recent Scottish short film made entirely in Aberdeenshire by local talent. At the date of upload, editing is coming to a conclusion and the final assembly cut should be available soon for special effects, sound design and scoring to begin.

The four distinct pieces you hear are: the Main Theme, Montage music, 'Will's Arrival' (version 1), and 'Will's Arrival' (version 2).

"Lara's Theme" is the name given to a leitmotif written for the 1965 film Doctor Zhivago by composer Maurice Jarre. Soon afterward, the leitmotif became the basis of the song "Somewhere, My Love".Numerous versions, both orchestral and vocal, have been recorded, among the most popular was the version by Ray Conniff Singers. This is my own interpretation.

Historical background
Composed in 1931 by Herman Hupfeld for the Broadway revue Everybody’s Welcome, “As Time Goes By” might have remained a pleasant theatre ballad had it not been woven into the 1942 film Casablanca. Dooley Wilson’s piano‑bar rendition under Rick’s Moroccan ceiling turned the song into an emblem of wartime longing, and its opening line—“You must remember this”—is now shorthand for nostalgia itself. Over the decades, jazz singers and instrumentalists from Sarah Vaughan to Oscar Peterson have revisited its elegant 32‑bar form, letting the timeless melody drift across swing, bossa, and torch‑ballad treatments.

About this trio arrangement

Instrumentation – nylon‑string guitar (melody & chord­­‑melody), upright bass, and brush‑kit drums. No strings or pads this time—just a warm, intimate trio captured in one take.

Tempo & feel – a relaxed ≈ 122 BPM 4/4 swing, slow enough to let every lyric breathe yet lively enough for gentle walking bass.

Key & harmony – we open in D major, gliding through Hupfeld’s classic cycle (Dmaj7 → A7 → Bm7 → E7) before teasing darker colors with half‑diminished and tritone‑sub dominants in the bridge. 

Texture – the guitar states the head in soft chord‑melody, adding upper‑structure tensions (♯11, 13) on the A7s. Brushes stay mostly on snare rim and ride edge, while the bass walks in round half‑steps, occasionally dropping to two‑feel for cinematic space. A single‑chorus solo lets guitar slip into double‑time eighths—just enough sparkle—before returning to a whispered out‑head that lands on a luminous D maj9 fading like the last note on Rick’s piano.

“Alfie’s Theme” was composed by Sonny Rollins in 1966 for the film Alfie, starring Michael Caine. Rather than simply scoring to picture, Rollins brought his full improvisational spirit, crafting themes that stood alone as hard-bop compositions. “Alfie’s Theme” became the film’s jazz signature: upbeat, harmonically rich, and tinged with Rollins’s characteristic mix of streetwise swing and melodic lyricism. It remains a standout among film scores for its refusal to compromise jazz idioms for cinematic polish.

About this arrangement
Instrumentation – This version is arranged for nylon-string guitar, acoustic bass, and drums. No keys or pads are used, giving the trio a grounded, acoustic jazz feel.

Tempo & feel – Marked at ≈ 141 BPM, the piece grooves in a medium swing with syncopated phrasing and offbeat accentuation, evoking the swagger and humor of the film’s protagonist.

Key & harmony – Centered in F major, with quick changes to D7♭9, Gm7, C13♭9, and other colorful chords. The chart includes rich reharmonizations like F/A, C7sus, and B♭13♯11, which give the theme modern jazz bite.

Texture & development – The guitar carries the melody in chord-melody style, weaving syncopated lines with chromatic passing tones. The bass walks and outlines substitutions confidently, while brushes and sticks add subtle rhythmic color. The form features extended sections with ii–V movements and a cycling turnaround vamp that reflects Rollins’s improvisatory roots.

Mood & character – Lively, clever, and swinging with a wink. The melodic phrasing and rhythmic interplay suggest urban vitality—the kind that moves between alleyways, late-night diners, and rooftop musings.

Some of the biggest DJ names in the world hail from Belgium, producing music that has taken us to the furthest corners of house & techno music. Gijs Cox is a good example of what the small country brings to the world stage. A DJ/Producer who is able to merge various genres and combine them into a driving collection of beats and catchy grooves.

He was already on the line-up with world famous artists such as; Snoop Dogg, Sean Paul, Charlotte De Witte, Nina Kraviz, Kölsch, Camelphat, Goose, Soulwax, Boys Noize, Fred Again..., Joyhauser, Jamie Jones, Patrick Topping, Joris Voorn, ... His ability to create that indefinable magic dropping in a set helps it stand out from the crowd. 
From the influences of rock and urban to commercial and 90s/00s straight to house & techno and beyond... His journey is one that transcends boundaries and builds the party atmosphere for all audiences.

In 2021 & 2022, Gijs Cox entered the scene as a producer and it was a huge success! He launched a huge release schedule with songs like 'IDLY', 'By My Side', 'Higher', 'Boom', ... Immediately he was asked to play the opening set at the famous Belgian festival; 'Pukkelpop' (as you can see here; https://youtu.be/vag_zZbOQtU) where he gave the 'Boiler Room' crowd an unforgettable opening set! After only 15 minutes everyone started screaming and singing and the party really started! Briefly; this was one to never forget! In recent years, his DJ gigs have taken him to almost every corner of Belgium, from Hasselt to Tongeren, from Diepenbeek to Bocholt to Roeselare, Lier, Antwerp, Brussels, Ghent, ... There are few places where you haven't seen him yet ! From gigs in famous clubs like; La Rocca, Versuz, Groovy Tunes to gigs on radio stations like Topradio & many others! In recent years, this guy has certainly proven that he deserves to be one of the bigger Belgian DJs! In 2023, he will once again rock the Techno Scene with another extensive release schedule with tracks like 'CU', 'Squeeze', 'Clouds' & 'Vortex' and his latest tracks 'Morning Light' & 'Dust'. With these Festival-inspired anthems that pump like no other, he's about to rock the Belgian club scene once again.

Mostly around vocals I saw a piano near by and wanted to play. Unable to process more than a few note on the page at a time, I was never able to succeed at piano attempts until I taught myself one cord at a time. 

I began this journey at age 46, and with no lessons I’ve composed this collection. Each song was completed in an hour as a challenge to stay focused and get better at my expressions. Still not reading music, I enjoy every moment in front of the keyboard. 

You should enjoy what you do and if others do as well, it’s a bonus.
