About five years ago, I wrote a piece called Nearside, which took as its title the name that my friends used to refer to the the bank closest to us of the Milwaukee River. This was the first time Julia, Cameron, and I had all worked together on a concert. Aside from a cardboard factory, the riverbank was largely covered in a young forest with little evidence of development. The opposing bank however, creatively dubbed "farside," showed more obvious signs of once having been a site of industrialization—our preferred way of crossing over was to hop the fence of a decrepit concrete dam to where the crumbling remains of buildings that dotted the far side formed a barely-visible skeleton overrun with freely-growing vegetation, each vine and root creeping through each other to blanket the ruins.

Largely built from the same motivic idea as Nearside, Farside takes it in a very different direction, which, while not programmatic, holds a dynamic that reflects its eponym. A tension permeates the work between two sublime forces: a mechanizing drive which threatens to annihilate all development through ceaseless reproduction, yet whose generative nature is the very essence of an organicity itself ever at risk of falling into empty habit. Although the area by the river has since been redeveloped and the dam torn down, the very allure I experienced as a teenager stemmed from the interpenetration of these dilapidated shells of deindustrialization with the new ecosystem that they allowed—so too in Farside, it is only with their broken instruments that the duo learns to make "whole" music.

George Papajohn (b. 1998 Milwaukee) is a composer, improvisor, and multi-instrumentalist currently based in the San Francisco Bay Area. His recent work engages with latent tensions of identity held within the material, historical, and phenomenological aspects of sound. 

His music has been performed by Ensemble Dal Niente, the Northwestern University Contemporary Music Ensemble, and by frequent collaborators Cameron Roberts and Julia Ansolabehere. George earned his B.M. in music composition at the Northwestern University Bienen School of Music where he studied with Alex Mincek, Hans Thomalla, and Jay Alan Yim. He is currently pursuing a PhD in music composition at the University of California, Berkeley.
