‘Speaker Rotations’ is the new sound collection from NY-based artist/composer Nickolas Mohanna, an enchanting arrangement of guitar, trombone, and piano.

Rooted in an ongoing improvisational practice, the work arose from live experiments and extended techniques with feedback resonance. The results swell in loops of hypnotic delay cast against stiff digital textures, field recordings, and spatial expressions. The music feels like you are in the room with the artist; it has a presence in headphones but rewards listening aloud where the music can live and breathe.

“There is a refusal to genre in this recording that I've embraced in my studio practice where feeling becomes the catalyst,” shares Mohanna, “and these pieces were made in that mode—with an expressionist frame of mind, exploring the dissonance and impermanence of the sounds.”

London Centre for Nanotechnology researchers recorded the sounds of their lab’s for World Quantum Day. They were then stitched into a soundscape and guided meditation that draws inspiration from quantum concepts.

Absorbed Terrain mixes music, field recordings, and stories collected from our surrounding environments. Episodes will feature musicians, ethnomusicologists, biologists, archivists, and writers working within the venn diagram of sound and environment. 

Mara Schwerdtfeger is a composer and curator based in Eora Sydney. She plays the viola and collaborates with her laptop to create live performances and recorded pieces for film, dance, and gallery spaces. Informed by interactions and perspectives within environments, her work questions the coexistence and understanding between those who inhabit them.

Have you ever thought of what the world would sound like without birds? KatoAvia (The Disappearings) (2023) is a soundscape journey featuring four endangered Finnish bird species and their stories.

1) Larus fuscus (00:00) is the most Finnish bird in the world. As much as half of the world's population nests in Finland.

2) Oriolus oriolus (02:45) is a tropical-looking yellow bird. Every year they take off to a dangerous journey above the Mediterranean. Only few return, since they are hunted for haute cuisine and "just for fun".

3) Poecile montanus (05:30) is a cute, fluffy bird who lives in old, diverse forests. It needs soft wood to carve its nest with its tiny beak. It is rapidly disappearing due to forestry.

4) Emberiza hortulana's (08:54) singing used to be a sure sign of arriving summer. Nowadays it is a rarity. Its population has suffered a striking 99% drop in the last 30 decades. This is due to the use of pesticides and the disappearing of headlands by traditional fields. It's said its singing inspired Beethoven to write his 5th symphony. Who knows if we'll witness the last Emberiza hortulana singing its phrase.

5) The Finale (12:36) is a soundscape of a land without birdsong. It shows what's left, and ends in a dystopic forest fire.

We still have mesmerizing beauty all around us. Forests, birds, flowers, rivers and pure rainfall. We can't live in a dystopy. The time to save what's rest of our planet is now.
