Session Notes — “Biofeedback in Bloom”
Tonight’s patch was all about blending the new with the familiar. Two recent arrivals joined my rack, meeting a couple of long standing favorites in a performance that felt equal parts science experiment and dreamscape.
The Pocket Scion from Instruō sat at the heart of it all — a tiny, unassuming slab that listens to living things. Touch it, and it listens back, translating biofeedback into MIDI, sound, and raw data. It’s like holding a conversation with your own nervous system.
From there, the Polyend Poly 2 took over, acting as interpreter. The Scion’s USB MIDI stream flowed into the Poly 2, which reshaped it into CV and Gate signals. Those pulses woke up Qu Bit Surface and Mutable Instruments Rings, both tuned to sympathetic strings mode. Their voices shimmered and swelled, their attack, decay, and tone shifting under my hands as the piece unfolded.
Hovering over it all was Oneiroi from Befaco — my new ambient architect. It caught a fragment of the Scion’s output, tucked it into its looper, flipped it backwards, and dropped it an octave. That loop became the bedrock, mutating under Oneiroi’s own CV modulation while I layered new gestures from the Scion’s conductive plates in real time.
The scales were a little game of their own: the Scion quantized to whole tones, while the Poly 2 imposed its “Indian” scale over the top. The Scion can speak in five voices, but tonight I let only two through. The rest of the space was filled by the looper’s ghost — a buffer that made the whole thing feel far larger than the sum of its parts.
When the performance felt complete, I captured it on a TASCAM D40. Back in the DAW, I gave it a gentle fade in and out, washed it with a touch more Eventide SP12 reverb, and pitched the entire piece down three semitones.
The result is a slow moving, breathing texture — part human, part machine, part something else entirely. A conversation between fingertips, circuits, and the quiet hum of living matter.
