Exclusive: Natebytheway - 1059 To Btown

Kulture Galerie readies its first digital only release, NFTs 999, bringing to you four fresh cuts from up- and coming artists carefully chosen by the label- and tastemakers from Metropolitan Soul Museum. After Kulture Galerie Year 1 and Volume 1 the latest EP NFTs 999 marks the overall third outing from the label and again it's a various artist affair. The EP kickstarts with Berliner Nate Willert, known under his artist moniker Natebytheway, who contributes 1059 To Btown to the release. Described as a "wonky chugger" the track also contains deep-chord progressions with a funky note. 1059 To Btown probably is not only a delicate way to open up the EP but also an excellent choice to get your audience on the dance floor involved and tee them up for the night. Carefully chosen triplets as well as further little details and the chunky bass line round off Natebytheway's track.

Natebytheway delivers his new EP ‘Witless Q&A’s via the Filippo MSM helmed Kulture Galerie this February, comprising five original cuts.

Natebytheway is a rising Berlin based producer and DJ dropping dynamic dancefloor bumpers as self-releases via his own bandcamp while just over the horizon is a return to Kulture Galerie following his contribution to the labels NFTS 999 compilation and a single on Gene On Earth’s nug-net imprint.

Opening the EP is ‘varoom’, a twisting and turning jaunt through an amalgamation of twitchy acid squelches, resonant licks, crisp drums and low-pitched vocals. ‘pleaseordermefries’ follows, embracing a more classic deep house aesthetic with shimmering chords, ethereal pad textures, hypnotic vocal chants and heavily swung drums before ‘kennywho’ wanders down the unique path of hip house with warped strings, pulsating subs, hip hop vocal lines and snappy percussion throughout.

‘cloudaddict’ then diverges back into dreamy realms with pillowy soft, cloudy atmospherics and breathy voices floating atop modulating rhythms and snaking bass notes. ‘didyouwant’ finally rounds out the package, flipping the switch entirely to bright vintage keys, a bumpy bass groove, robotic synth licks and saturated disco drums.

With Beatnik Collective stepping into its third chapter, the Manchester label - helmed by Adam and Rossa - ushers in its first full artist EP, “Hardtoknow” by Natebytheway. The four-tracker marks both an end and a beginning for the San Francisco-born producer: his last works produced in Berlin before returning home, yet also the latest step in a steadily rising trajectory that already saw him turn heads with a standout release on Growing Pleasures, championed by the likes of Dr. Banana.

The A2 cut, “Snazzy init”, distills Nate’s sonic identity into five and a half minutes of understated mischief. Opening with otherworldly, space-flecked tones, the track swiftly grounds itself in a supple, groove-laden house bassline - neither flashy nor forceful, but irresistibly head-nodding. Falsetto-style vocal chops weave in and out like fleeting apparitions, giving the track a playful eccentricity without ever breaking its cool. Piano stabs punctuate the mix, trading places with those airy cosmic flourishes, lending a subtle tension-and-release dynamic that makes the track feel alive without ever overreaching.

It’s laidback, it’s slick, and it’s got that sly “must-drop” character that sneaks its way into nearly any set. “Snazzy init” slides in, takes control of the floor, and leaves you wondering why you’d ever want to play anything else. Natebytheway proves once again that his grooves may be born in Berlin, but their pull is universal.

Torture the Artist - your source for contemporary electronic music

Torture the Artist is a webzine, or a magazine made for the internet, geared towards those with a passion for contemporary electronic music, with subgenres including Techno, Tech House, Deep House and Eletronica, as well as a small amount of Indie and Alternative. Founded in 2014 by Holger Breuer, a German native and lover of the arts, Torture the Artist now consists of five team members from all around the world.

In addition to publishing interviews, music reviews, DJ charts and track premieres, the webzine hosts out a  podcast series called 'art:casts'. This medium gives DJs and producers the artistic freedom to highlight their different musical styles while not being restricted by factors such as setting, and connecting them to a wider audience. 

Being in its ninth year, Torture the Artist has gained a strong and active online support group, including music enthusiasts to label managers and artists themselves, creating a cohesive community with music as their bond.
