Today we interview two contributing authors of Red Nation Rising, the first book ever to investigate and explain the violent dynamics of bordertowns. Bordertowns are white-dominated towns and cities that operate according to the same political and spatial logics as all other American towns and cities. The difference is that these settlements get their name from their location at the borders of current-day reservation boundaries, which separate the territory of sovereign Native nations from lands claimed by the United States.
Despite this rich and important history of political and material struggle, little has been written about bordertowns. Red Nation Rising marks the first effort to tell these entangled histories and inspire a new generation of Native freedom fighters to return to bordertowns as key front lines in the long struggle for Native liberation from US colonial control. This book is a manual for navigating the extreme violence that Native people experience in reservation bordertowns and a manifesto for indigenous liberation that builds on long traditions of Native resistance to bordertown violence. Part 1 of Red Nation Rising: From Bordertown Violence to Native Liberation

Part 1:
In 2015 the United States congress passed the annual National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which included the rider: The Southeastern Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation Act 2014 (“Act”). The “Act” will grant Resolution Copper, a joint venture between Rio Tinto and BHP, the 2,200 acres located in the Tonto National Forest in Arizona. If Resolution Copper succeeds in completing the land transfer, they will build one of the largest open ore and copper mining pits in the world, leaving once completed, a 1,000 foot-deep crater over 2 miles across. Chi’chil Bildagoteel (Oak Flat) is an active, cultural sacred site to the N’dee (San Carlos Apache Nation) and surround Native American nations. 

The Apache Stronghold has been and continues leading the struggle to protect and save Oak Flat for future generations. They are presently on a Spiritual Convoy from the Apache Nation to San Francisco, CA for the 9th Circuit hearing where they are seeking an injunction to prevent the land exchange of Oak Flat to Resolution Copper. Protecting Chi’chil Bildagoteel (Oak Flat): The Apache Stronghold Spiritual Convoy

Today on American Indian Airwaves we hear from two distinguished Indigenous elders on the National Day of Mourning first established in 1970. Both guest, Georgianna Sanchez (Chumash Nation), elder, cultural bearer, and scholar; and George “Tink” Tinker (Osage Nation), elder, cultural bearer, and scholar at the Iliff School of Theology, address the National Day of Mourning, what the settler colonial violent holiday, Thanksgiving Day, means to them, and what are Indigenous peoples’ understandings and comprehension surrounding this time of the year. 

History of National Day of Mourning
The National Day of Mourning reminds us all that Thanksgiving is only part of the story. Native Americans, since 1970, have gathered at noon on Cole’s Hill in Plymouth, Massachusetts, to commemorate a National Day of Mourning on Thanksgiving Day. 
Pilgrims landed in Plymouth and established the first colony in 1620. As such, it’s the oldest municipality in New England. Many Native Americans, however, don’t celebrate the arrival of the Pilgrims and other European settlers. Thanksgiving, to them, is a brutal reminder of “the genocide of millions of Native people, the theft of Native lands, and the relentless assault on Native culture.” 
They participate as a way to honor Native ancestors and the struggles of Native peoples to survive today. “It is a day of remembrance and spiritual connection as well as a protest of the racism and oppression which Native Americans continue to experience.”
The United American Indians of New England (UAINE) sponsors this event. They maintain that the Pilgrims arrived in North America and claimed tribal land for their own, as opposed to establishing a mutually beneficial relationship with the local inhabitants. UAINE members believe that these settlers “introduced sexism, racism, anti-homosexual bigotry, jails, and the class system.”
The National Day of Mourning generally begins at noon and includes a march through the historic district of Plymouth. While the UAINE encourages people of all backgrounds to attend the protests, only Native speakers are invited to give these speeches about the past, as well as current obstacles their people have overcome. Guests are asked to bring non-alcoholic beverages, desserts, fresh fruits and vegetables, or pre-cooked items. The protest is open to anyone, and has attracted other minority activists.

The National Day Mourning & Dismantling the Thanksgiving Day Holiday

Part 1
The People of the Red Mountain are an Indigenous led grassroot organization comprised of Paiute & Shoshone peoples, surrounding Indigenous nations, and supporters working to protect Pee’hee Mu’huh (Thacker Pass) from the possible construction of the Thacker Pass Lithium Mine in northwest Nevada. If  the mine is built it would be the United States largest source of lithium supply generating 60,000 metric tons of battery-grade lithium carbonate annually. The People of the Red Mountain are calling for support in demanding the U.S. Department of the Interior to rescind the Thacker Pass Lithium Mine Project Final Environmental Impact Statement, Record of Decision, and Plan of Operations. 

Lithium Nevada Corp. is a subsidiary of the Canadian corporation Lithium Americas Corp. which proposes to build the open pit lithium mine with a project area of almost 17,933 acres that will use  5,200 acre-feet per year of water (equivalent to an average pumping rate of 3,224 gallons per minute) in one of the driest regions in the nation. Lithium Nevada Corporation characterizes the mine as a “green” project, despite estimates the mine will produce an estimated 152,703 tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year and will cause irreversible harm to the Fort McDermitt Paiute and Shoshone Nation, ancestral massacre sites, the water, air, medicines, culturally important wildlife relations, and everything else the land and waters culturally sustain for the Peoples. The Bureau of Land Management approved the mine on January 15, 2021, without adequately consulting our tribal members. Tune in on how support and Pee’hee Mu’huh (Thacker Pass).

Part 2:
On 2/27/2022, the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report, Working Group II, Climate Change 2022: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability Report was released with participation from Indigenous scholars, academics, and scientist in still a relatively new phenomenon (eight to ten years). For more sixteen years, Indigenous peoples were largely excluded in participating in the previous IPCC assessment reports. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was established by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in 1988. In 1990, the IPCC’s First Assessment Report (FAR) was published. However, in 2007, the IPCC and former U.S. President Al Gore won a Nobel Peace Prize while Indigenous peoples were absent and often locked out of the IPCC and WMO process. 

Today’s guest is one several Indigenous academics, scholars, and scientist to participate and contribute to the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report, Working Group II, Climate Change 2022: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability. For close to over 50 years, Dr. John M. Anderson has been researching into and writing on the Chumash history and culture since the early 1970s at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His includes the Tejon Reservation in CA and the Treaty with the Castake, Texon, Etc., of 1851 between several California Indigenous nations  whose lands range from presently what is known as Santa Maria to Lompoc to Santa Barbara, Ventura, Los Angeles, and Long Beach — and stretching eastward into the Mojave Desert to a point between Barstow and Las Vegas. William I. Robinson’s new book, Global Civil War: Capitalism Post-Pandemic, is a big picture synthesis of a global capitalism in a state of  deep crisis that is cascading social, political, and cultural conflicts all over Mother Earth with dire implications for not only Indigenous peoples and their respective First Nations, but also the futures of lives unless massive structural changes immediately occur. One major factor to the inordinate concentration of political, economic, and cultural power is a much more advanced digitalization of the entire global economy and society and of the social and political during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic; and Robinson contends the pandemic lockdowns served as dry runs for how digitalization may allow the dominant groups to step up restructuring time and space and to exercise greater control over the global working class. The global capitalist system is now pushing toward expansion through militarization, wars, and conflicts, through a new round of violent dispossession, and through further plunder of the state. All this and more in part one of a three-part interview with William I. Robinson on Global Civil War: Capitalism Post-Pandemic (2022).

Contemporary Hawaii—taro lands vanish, rich mainlanders buy up beachfront, drugs run rampant, homeless camp in the mountains, politicians make backroom deals.

In 1997, social services rescues Boi (four), Shane (five), and Glory (six), three abused and neglected siblings from a junked city bus where they have been living with their frail dying grandmother and addict mother. Shane is adopted by an old-money state senator/future governor and his former beauty-queen wife. A taro farmer and his Polynesian Cultural Center hula-dancer wife take in Boi while the oldest, Glory, ends up back with her child-burning mother and a stepfather so bad that he makes her mother look like a saint. When these three siblings reunite in their teens and 20s, there are immediate conflicts as they attempt to change their life trajectories. Boi No Good is about a rich kid trying to be street tough, a criminal with a horrific past who will do anything to stay free, and a juvie turned cop who wants to both save the world and blow it up. When a pending law threatens to change the face of Hawaii, Boi will do anything to stop it even if his siblings and a governor he calls Uncle stand in the way.

McKinney takes us again on a romp through noir Hawaii as he traces the life arcs of three lives grappling with emotional and social issues in a world that was not of their making. A powerful story of sibling conflict set amid sharp class and ethnic divisions exposing social ills swept under the rug to not deter Hawaii's image as paradise.

On June 10th, 2022, a Bolivian court sentenced former de facto president of Bolivia, Jeanine Áñez, to 10 years in prison. Áñez assumed power during a violent and illegal coup in November 2019 that ousted the country’s popular Indigenous president, Evo Morales, sending him into exile, and killing over 37 people.
