Where Their Loyalties Lie

This lecture discusses key ideas from the 20th Century American science-fiction short story writer and novelist, Philip K. Dick's novel The Man In The High Castle

It focuses specifically on one of the main characters of the work, the Abwehr (Naval Counter-Intelligence) captain and agent Rudolph Wegner, who we are first introduced to under his disguise as Victor Baynes, a Swedish businessman who is traveling to the Pacific States of America in order to discuss plastic injection moldings with Japanese trade officials.  As it turns out, he is set to meet with the Japanese General Tedeki, to reveal a Nazi plot called Operation Dandelion, which involves a false flag operation in the Rocky Mountain States, a nuclear attack on the Japanese Home Islands, and the subsequent absorbtion of Japanese territories by the German Reich.

Philip Dick, Man In The High Castle - Rudolph Wegner, Abwehr Operative - Sadler's Lectures

This lecture discusses key ideas from the 20th Century American science-fiction short story writer and novelist, Philip K. Dick's novel The Man In The High Castle

It focuses specifically on one of the characters central to the story, the Swiss Nazi assassin, on a mission to kill the "man in the high castle", Hawthorne Abendsen, the author of The Grasshopper Lies Heavy. He poses very convincingly as a bitter Italian veteran and trucker, who hooks up with Juliana Frink and proposes they go meet Abendsen. One of the interesting narrative features of this character is that we see him primarily only through his interactions with Juliana.

How in the world did people become Nazis? How could it have happened? These are questions we grew up with and, maybe, always hoped against hope we wouldn't be able to answer. There's a comfort in them remaining mysterious, but in that comfort we're vulnerable. How can we possibly make good on "Never Again" if we do not know how it happened? Sadly, today we're threatened with the same menace. Sadly, today, we're learning not how it could have happened, but exactly how it happened because it's happening again around us. More and more of us know, with our stomachs sunken, that it is now time to speak up, but that raises another question: how? We don't even know how it happened, much less what could have stopped it. Enter Melita Maschmann, former Nazi, and her admirable book (at least so far as I've read!), Account Rendered: A Dossier on My Former Self (https://amzn.to/42rimB2) (1964). In this book, written in the form of a long letter to her teenage best friend, who was Jewish, she endeavors to explain how it could have happened to a good, respectable, well-off, conservative girl like her who went on to join the Hitler Youth and become a Nazi. She wrote it so we can know how it happened. She wrote it because "Never Again" means never. She wrote it in case "Never Again" ever again becomes now. In this episode of the New Discourses Podcast, host James Lindsay introduces the book and reads a few poignant excerpts with ominous parallels to today. Aber wir haben es geschafft, sie noch vor der Bundestagswahl 2025 zu veröffentlichen und das ist nicht irrelevant, denn immerhin reden wir über Die Welle - ein  Film, der nicht nur allgemein sehr politisch ist, sondern aufgrund seiner Thematik (Stichwort Faschismus) aktueller denn je ist. Die AfD wird in Deutschland immer stärker und bedroht unsere Demokratie. Daher unser Aufruf an euch alle: Geht bitte morgen wählen (wenn ihr das hier noch am Release-Tag lesen solltet) und wählt eine demokratische, idealerweise linke Partei.
