'Liberations' is a tribute to Emmeline Pankhurst, a stalwart advocate for women's suffrage, and to Alan Lomax, the American ethnomusicologist.

The track is a potent fusion of funk, rock, electro, and gospel, delivering a raw and electrifying sonic experience.

In the early 20th century, men and women from the United States and the United Kingdom vigorously campaigned for their right to vote, with the suffrage movements in both countries sharing ideas and inspiration despite their unique characteristics. In 1913, the renowned British suffragist Emmeline Pankhurst delivered a powerful speech in Hartford at the Parsons Theater.

Simultaneously, during this era, John and Alan Lomax recorded a variety of southern musicians, including Afro-Americans, white performers, and Mexican-Americans, for the Library of Congress. In 1934, they documented a work song called "Long John," performed by "Lightning" and a group of black inmates at Darrington State Prison Farm in Texas. These prisoners, while working together in labor gangs to break rocks and clear swamps, relied on the rhythmic and chant-like patterns of work songs, originally rooted in the collective labor of slavery, to synchronize their efforts. 'Liberations' is a hommage to the battles against tyranny and injustice.

Joshua McCarter Simpson (ca. 1820 - April 20, 1877) was a store proprietor, herbalist, poet and lyricist in the United States. He lamented the enslavement of African Americans, called out the hypocrisy of white Christian abusers, and denounced the brutal treatment and discrimination African Americans received. His songs were published in 1854 as "The Emancipation Car: Being an Original Composition of Anti-Slavery Ballads, Composed Exclusively for the Underground Railroad." His work was well known and widely circulated during his lifetime.

He was fostered before being leased out as an orphan. He was indentured until age 21. He attended an Abolitionist school in Big Bottom, Ohio and Oberlin Collegiate Institute in Oberlin, Ohio. He wrote anti-slavery verses and set them to popular tunes.

This track reimagines Joshua McCarter Simpson's original abolitionist poem, bringing its message into the present day. With powerful gospel-infused vocals, driving percussion, and a modern protest energy, it speaks to today's struggles—immigration rights, mass deportations, LGBT rights, and the erosion of civil liberties. Blending the soul of spirituals with the urgency of activism, this song is both a tribute to the past and a rallying cry for justice today.

To the White People of America (2025)

"Motherless Boy" is my adaptation of the old "Negro Spiritual" song based upon a hymn, which I have turned into a fast paced tribal style jam. This version is inspired by the famous Richie Havens performance at Woodstock '69 and is so fast that it is more like acoustic rock than folk music, and contains so much percussion that it has a tribal type of feel to it.  Recorded using a Crafter Jumbo Acoustic Guitar, a Yamaha F335 Acoustic Guitar, Latin Percussion Congas, 2 Tambourines, a Wood Shaker, an Egg Shaker, a Goat Hoof Rattle, an SM57 Microphone, a Sennheiser e906 Microphone, and Reaper Digital Audio Workstation. I hope this jam gets you moving!
