This week in part 2 we return to see the straw bale dream home 8 years after filming a story on the Making of the Straw Bale Dream Home. 
This home features some of the most innovative features we've seen in any green home. 
Lance and Wendy Olson lead us on a tour of their version of a passive house that is heated mostly by passive solar energy.
The home has many innovative features including passive solar energy storing rammed Earth walls, a solar thermal in floor hydronic heating system and solar PV modules to provide the electricity.
Then there are recycled materials in the form of cupboard doors made from hardwood seat backs from the Jack Singer Concert Hall and many other quirky features too.

396B. Anatomy of an Amazing Net-Zero Straw Bale Dream Home

When Blatchford was announced as the largest planned carbon neutral community in North America it was seen as "wildly ambitious."
"It's right in the heart of the city, connected to transit, and boasts short travel distances. There's a grocery store already, there's an LRT stop, it's all the things that new neighbourhoods often wait years and years for, uh, but they're already here in Blatchford," says Anne Stevenson City Councillor for Edmonton, Alberta. 
Today Blatchford people-centred urban design is attracting residents and near net-zero building standards are just what's needed to build the affordable, resilient and sustainable neighbourhoods of the future.
In short this is where things are going and "We've got a great head start in Blatchford," says Stevenson.
We talk to the city councillor, the developer and some residents who are now living in this super sustainable neighbourhood located right in the heart of the City.
This is part 1 in a series we are doing talking to builders, home owners, heat pump companies about this amazing project in North America's most northerly big city.

“What we love about Blatchford is that all of the homes here are heated with renewable energy,” says Heather MacKenzie," of their home in the largest carbon neutral community in North America.
In Part 2 of our series on Blatchford Carbon Neutral Community we meet Heather and Justin, two of the early residents of this visionary community. 
Blatchford has a green building code, geo-exchange (geothermal) district heating and its located right in the heart of the city. 
Heather and Justin love the renewable energy heating, the downtown location of their home and the amazing amenities you would not expect in a downtown neighbourhood: a lake with wildlife, walking paths, green spaces, a pedestrian only street in front of their home, a playground, community garden and they really love that there is a light rail transit station right on site.

Their unique combination of solar and air-source heat pumps mean homeowners can wind up paying little or nothing for their utilities, a boon in an energy uncertain future. We talk to the company founder Reza Nasseri, Micah Dueck of Landmark and Kassandra Starkell and Martin Martinyiak a young couple who made their first home purchase a net-zero home. Oh, these net-zero homes also come with a battery storage system that's part of a pilot program to create a virtual power plant out of a network of similar homes.

400. Landmark net-zero finds home in Blatchford Carbon Neutral Community

Barbados officially now has a new Energy Transition and Investment Plan, also known as E-tip. 

The plan,was formally launched at the recently held Sustainable Energy for All forum and lays out the roadmap for the country to achieve net-zero by 2035.

In 2024, low-carbon power (renewables like solar & wind, plus nuclear) achieved a landmark 40.9% share of global electricity. This is its highest proportion since the 1940s, a remarkable feat considering today's electricity system is 50 times larger. This signals clear and accelerating momentum in global power sector decarbonization.

☀️ Solar Power: The Undisputed Engine of the Energy Transition
Solar energy is the primary force driving this transformation. It was the largest source of new electricity generation globally for the third year running, adding an impressive 474 TWh in 2024 (a 29% year-on-year growth), and has been the fastest-growing electricity source for two decades. Solar generation has doubled in just three years to 2,131 TWh (enough to power all of India!), with global solar capacity hitting 2 Terawatts (TW). Solar is critical for meeting rising demand and displacing fossil fuels.

📈 Rising Demand & New Structural Drivers: A Complex Energy Landscape
While clean energy surges, global electricity demand also grew significantly by 4.0% in 2024, exceeding 30,000 TWh. This growth is driven by heatwaves and, increasingly, by new structural factors: the expansion of Electric Vehicles (EVs), heat pumps, and energy-intensive data centers (for AI and cryptocurrency), whose combined impact on demand growth has more than doubled in just five years. The energy transition must rapidly adapt to these evolving consumption patterns.

⛽ The Fossil Fuel Outlook: Nuance and an Approaching Decline
Global fossil fuel generation rose by 1.4% in 2024, leading to record power sector emissions. However, Ember's report clarifies this was primarily due to hotter temperatures increasing cooling demand. Without this weather impact, the rise would have been minimal (0.2%), as clean energy (927 TWh new generation in 2024) covered 96% of other demand growth. The crucial insight: fossil fuel generation faces a structural decline. Ember’s Managing Director states, "the era of fossil growth is coming to an end."

🔋 The Path Forward: Flexibility, Advanced Storage, and Global Collaboration
Integrating more variable renewables like solar and wind requires enhanced flexibility. Battery storage is a key enabler, with costs falling (lithium-ion pack prices down 20% in 2024) and record installations (69 GW in 2024, nearly doubling total capacity). This makes concepts like 24-hour solar power more feasible. The clean energy deployment in major economies like China and India is also pivotal for a sustained global decline in fossil fuel use.

Ember's 2025 review highlights significant progress, especially from solar, but also considerable challenges from rising demand and the need for global cooperation. The fossil fuel era is waning, but our choices today will determine the pace and success of this vital transition.

#38 The UK's £22 Billion Carbon Capture Gamble!

New modelling from the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis shows we’ve been looking for solutions to rising electricity prices in the wrong places. The real key to slashing household energy bills isn’t more power plants or political debate over gas vs renewables. And it’s not one-off bill rebates either. It’s targeted energy upgrades in our homes. Efficient electric appliances, rooftop solar, home batteries, and thermal upgrades could slash bills by 80 to 90%, with the biggest savings in cities like Sydney. These upgrades not only reduce household energy use and bills but also cut demand on the broader grid, benefiting everyone by lowering peak demand and gas reliance. But what will it take to make these savings a reality? Jay Gordon is an Energy Finance Analyst at IEEFA and author of the new report.
