Melbourne producer Harvey Sutherland returns with “Cigarette”, the third in his series of stripped-back dancefloor tracks from the prolific synthesizer enthusiast and club DJ. 

Cigarette is smokey, lo-fi machine funk, drawing a lineage between Sutherland’s earlier hardware jams like “Superego” and his enduring obsession with 00s-era minimal techno and microhouse from artists like Akufen, Luomo and Ricardo Villalobos. It bubbles and fizzes along, giving way to some moody synth melodies before falling back into its chopped-up rhythms.

She's a successful corporate attorney, 
Her office is in a building
that doesn't have signs in the lobby.
She's never been to a car dealership.
She wears a suit that's expensive, 
but looking at it ya don't know
why it's expensive
ya just know it is. 

She has giant breasts, 
augmented by a sketchy doctor
who works in a strip mall 
somewhere in the Midwest. 
Her hair is big, blonde and curly, 
as if her second job involves a pole. 

Wait!? This story is going south fast. 
It's probably going to involve a pizza guy. 
I swear sometimes I read a naughty story
and it just seems 
like they added descriptive audio for the blind,
to some generic porn,
then the closet case
who sent me this, 
wrote it all down. 
While he was high. 

It's probably just me
I wrote a book
with a few sexy bits
in between the crazy bits.
Now when this guy thinks 
of kinky freakery 
he thinks of me. 
I'm not really happy 
about being ambassador
from the realm of sexy
to the aspiring perves 
unwilling to engage 
in literary discourse
with the people in
their own trailer park
in Oroville. 

I slug through the whole story, 
a few notes go into an email. 
"Successful corporate lawyers 
don't have a lot of time on their hands"
"Middle aged pizza delivery guys 
aren't muscular handsome
and usually don't have 
baguette sized weenies." 

More follows,
I proofread the email,
I backpedal, soften,
and edit. 
If dude asked me to rewrite this
how would I do it? 
How would I expect him to do it? 
Hours go by, 
half a pot of coffee 
goes into me
then back out. 

For all the time I spend
writing an email 
about a story 
I really didn't like 
I could have written a story 
about reading a story 
that I really did. 

Anyway it's my day off
It's almost dinner time
there's a guy 
on the other end 
of this "send" button. 
That may or may not even remember
that he asked me what I thought
about his attempt at a sexy story. 

If I can convey that his story 
completely failed to arouse me
in a positive way, 
then we could have another 
talk about the nature of sex
that will culminate 
in literal activities
with his baguette sized weenie, 
and maybe some pizza.

Harvey Sutherland, the Melbourne-born record producer, keyboard player, club DJ and bandleader, made a name amongst his hometown’s electronic underground with a string of cult dance singles. Early 12-inches like ‘Bermuda’ and ‘Priestess’ were records in love with classic soul and disco, but his debut album ‘Boy’ was guided by his obsessional traits and habits, ending up in a place he describes as “Neurotic Funk”. 

Boy has seen widespread acclaim since its release, with Resident Advisor noting “[his] sense of musicality has always been head and shoulders above his peers...his songs are full-blooded and fleshed-out…” His latest material is an exercise in techno minimalism — laser-focused club jams like ‘Hummingbird’ and ‘Nobody Like U’ set the stage for Harvey’s next chapter. 

His machine grooves are fired through a prism of crate-digging influences, from Todd Rundgren to Basic Channel and back again. His distinctive synthesiser tones have graced remixes and production for Disclosure, Khruangbin, Genesis Owusu and BadBadNotGood. A seasoned performer, he’s taken his live band to Glastonbury, dragged his Juno-60 into Berghain and turned the Melbourne Recital Centre into a full-fledged nightclub. Eclectic and groovy, Harvey Sutherland is Neurotic Funk.
