Welcome back! The latest hulaHOOP.fm megamix is from DJ Land Reform, who is a resident at 140+ @140plus, a DIY party based in DC. “I was going for an extremely low IQ, party-forward, sexy, hands-in-the-air vibe with 0 time to think about emotions or anything sad. “🙂👍” personified. Pure escapism and body music. What’s included is basically hard, yet funky and playful Dutch, British, and Spanish trance-adjacent sounds from the late 90s and early 2000s. I find with all these scenes there’s a common thread of donk/offbeat basses, cheeky vocal samples, epic synth leads, hoover sounds, and a lack of introspective vibes. I also threw in one contemporary song by DJ Fingerblast that fits this vibe perfectly. I wanted to showcase a faster style of mixing for myself. Normally I mix like an old head, letting my tracks play out really long, so it was a fun challenge to keep the pace of the mix higher the whole way through. Recently I’ve been inspired by greasy European trance DJs circa 2001 with those big silver headphones and a bunch of facial piercings. And everything Spanish from the 90s and 2000s; the Valencia/Bakalao scene, Mákina, Bumping/Poky etc. Also labels like Tidy Trax, Armada, Nukleuz, Contraseña, Blue, and Vicious Circle.”
