Ok I had to burn off some of the over thinking from the previous two. At some point a day ago, I sat on the guitar and ran my fingers up and down it a bunch. 

And then later in the day I found an acappella track I sent to Patrick Quinney in 2017 over Facebook messenger.

They went perfectly together. 

Oh but first I put the OOOOH in there which is lifted from the Behind the Scenes video of the making of Meat Loaf, Bat out of Hell. The OOOOH is from Two out of Three Ain't Bad. That's all I could get before the lead came in.

The "oooh" of me was the first two notes of me singing John Frusciante's Far Away, also 2017, also sent to PQ.

This track cracked me up genuinely the first two times I heard it, which was not the intent, but again, leaning into mistakes and limitations.

Walk Alone (Laura Marling cover) for Patrick Quinney

OMG this one took like 2 1/2 days but it's because it's the WORK WEEK. Still it probably took 2-4 hours but it's far too long to linger and dwell and worry and *gasp* plan, when the goal is: first thought, only thought. Don't question anything, just learn and play.

So anyway, here's this one.

As always the main rule is Try something new.

Here I tried several new things:

A metronome, so all the parts of this piece, believe it or not, should all be at 80 bpm, which is the pace Björk usually writes at so if it sounds like Björk, that's why.

The other was seeing how loud I could get with my lousy voice, which the answer was, not very, not often. But, I tried and we'll see where that leads.

I think I tried something else (besides stealing chords from Maria McKee but stealing chords doesn't count) but I can't remember what. Oh I remember, I played around with the idea of a verse/chorus structure but didn't much like it so dismantled it. So if I get there, it will still be new.
alright then, beginners mind still intact!

All the Bodies Return

Ok this one is just bonkers. Took two days (because now it's the work week) but probably less time than the others. 

It should probably be obvious I have no actual ideas, and just responding ideas.

There are two elements of theft in this song.

1. The middle section is lifted, tempo, chord changes, rhythm (and if you listen super closely you can probably hear the original I'm playing to) from Fleetwood Mac's Go Your Own Way..

2. The heavy synth part is my visual memory of the first part of the Star Trek Voyager theme song, which I could once play, and I once put stickers on my keyboard to help me play, but the stickers have worn down and I haven't tried it in a year and couldn't remember it.

Lean into limitations part: I couldn't get the voice software to be slower or insert more silences, so I did the opposite, had it stumble over itself with words, too many words. I guess that's an idea.

This is the shittiest music on the planet. I am so happy to be making it!

Neither was very ambitious or successful, but deadline: MET!

Lyrics written on the spot, then refined to the melody of Lady Madonna. Several drafts are left in the mix. 

Last line is probably the chorus (a new thing?) of another song, if I get there!

    Limits have to be leaned into; mistakes have to be left in as much as possible, seen as happy accidents first, mistakes only as a last resort.
     


The NEW thing I tried today was recording my own voice, and multi-tracking it (squatting in my basement hallway.)

The mistake/limit leaned into was I couldn't get the vocal track to be loud enough to put it where I wanted (at the end), so I had to put it all the way to the beginning! Ingenuity!

The thing I have yet to invest in is a metronome and it shows.

Lyrics were written last minute from scraps of paper from my Going in for the Snakes comics course.

The Resonating Machine

"Monica", is piano, keyboard percussion, and AI voice, made after a special online Zoom wedding I attended that made me too jittery to do anything else.

The AI voice is a good idea of mistakes being left in. I hate my own voice, and wanted a female voice, and went looking for an AI voice to sing, but I could only find these standard mid 2000-s voices. The first voice was strained and thin and only after downloading the file did  I see I had other options. So I had another voice speak it, this one sounding more mature. I love the effect of it coming in after the first two, immature, "Monica"s.

Lyrics were written on the spot in the AI text field, mostly thinking about the book I've been reading lately, Margaret Atwood's Surfacing, which has a woman searching for paintings on the rocks beneath the surface of a lake.

The "new thing" I tried today: EVERYTHING.

Probably not coincidentally, but forgotten by me, the officiant at the wedding I was at today was named Monica.
