In de tradititie van het mediteren is er een welbekend aforisme: 
"Niets bereiken, enkel arriveren."

Ons streven - het willen bereiken - is een heel natuurlijk onderdeel van ons menszijn. Het wordt vaak versterkt en gestimuleerd door onze omgeving en de samenleving waarin we ons bevinden. 

Neurologisch zijn onze hersenen bovendien ingericht om situaties te voorspellen. Onze hersenen zijn gericht op verwachtingen en verlangens. Het stuwt ons voort, houdt ons in leven en natuurlijk zijn er ook situaties waarin we lijden, waarin we weg willen uit het lijden. 

Hieruit ontstaat vaak het idee dat we ons best moeten doen om iets te bereiken. Meditatie wordt daarmee een gespannen bezigheid. Maar wat is dan het alternatief voor het voortdurend willen bereiken in onze geest? 

Dit is de oefening van het simpelweg arriveren in dit moment.
