The chief and council of an Algonquin community in Western Quebec never thought they would become nuclear waste experts. This changed last spring. 

Kebaowek First Nation was one of two communities given less than a year to figure out whether it approved of a plan to dispose of low-level nuclear waste on its unceded territory.
 
The waste in question has been sitting above ground at the Chalk River nuclear station for decades, waiting for its permanent home. Managers of the site are desperate to get the waste into the ground. 
They say this is the safest place for it. 

But Kebaowek isn’t so sure. The deadline for its conclusions is just around the corner. Here's the story of one Algonquin nation’s fight to protect its territory from the disposal of low-level nuclear waste.
