In 2021 in Denmark, a metal detectorist chanced upon twenty-something Migration Era gold objects weighing almost a kilogram in total. Several of these were so-called bracteates, medallions bearing runic inscriptions and strange iconography. One of these stated "... he is Odin's man". That makes it the oldest, direct, by-name reference to the deity ever recorded. What the hell did they mean by this? Who was Odin's man, and which other messages were recorded upon these enigmatic objects? One of the world's luckiest scholars, Krister Vasshus, joins us once again to discuss the find he could not talk about last time.

Dirk wurde im März 2016 an der Freien Universität Berlin mit der Dissertation "Die Lehre vom »arischen« Christentum. Das wissenschaftliche Selbstverständnis im Eisenacher »Entjudungsinstitut«" promoviert. Derzeit ist er wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Zentrum für Museale Sammlungswissenschaften an der Universität für Weiterbildung Krems und Lehrbeauftragter am Institut für Religionswissenschaft der Universität Wien.

Skáldmál Norðra (Chant of the North)

"Skáldmál Norðra" is an Old Norse-style chant that captures the fierce and indomitable spirit of the Northmen, invoking their gods and their readiness for battle. This chant reflects themes of honor, strength, and a connection to the divine, drawing on the imagery of Norse mythology.

The song opens with a powerful call to Norðri (the personification of the northern wind), with a prayer for Odin’s guidance and Thor’s protection. It envisions the fiery destruction of enemies and the rise of warriors. The reference to Valhalla highlights the eternal reward awaiting the fallen heroes in the afterlife.

The second stanza intensifies the imagery with ravens (Odin’s messengers) and wolves, symbols of battle and death, while blood, steel, and bravery are essential to survival. A toast is raised to the gods (Aesir), the sea, and victory, reinforcing the unbreakable bond between the Norse people and their fate, as their names are carved in stone and soul, ensuring eternal remembrance.

The final stanza is a resolute declaration of the Northmen’s fate. They forge their destiny through fire and trials, knowing that even in death, they do not truly perish. The clash of axes, the demand for shields, and Odin’s watching eyes all point to the ultimate judgment and valor in battle, where only the strongest will prevail.

This song is sung in a deep, resonant chant with a rhythmic cadence, capturing the raw power and determination of the Norse warriors as they prepare for battle and glory in the halls of Valhalla.
