did my best to recreate and tweak an old song that stuck with me. created with my own patch "Celestial Strat" in Omnisphere.

another one made from 32 bars in a track calles 'leave with me'.  i wonder who said that to whom for me to choose that name....

some pretty ravey / EDM-style synth stabs going here thanks to omnisphere.  
there's also song congas with far too far delay and reverb.  yet every time i took them out, it seemed they were acting as some weird kind of compression glue across the whole track.  you get used to them!

quite a pop tune really.  a few surprises with some 7 and 9 bar sections rather than the usual 8 to throw it off being completely predictable.  nice snare roll in around 2mins 30, which i actually programmed rather than grabbing something ready made from loopcloud!  

the breakdown at 3:30 takes the tune into a different direction with a whole a new tune befrore coming back to the last chorus.  well done paul, you just couldn't leave it as a nice simple pop tune, could you??!!

Turns Out You Knew

Another track built from a few chords put together about 4-5 years ago.  quite a simple pop tune, built around the call and response of the male and female vocals. 

it was written, arranged, produced in about 3 days.  yeah, there's bits that aren't perfect, but I'm happy just getting it out, otherwise it goes into the long pile of nearly, nearly but not quite there tracks....  

don't ask me what the lyrics are for the vocoder section.  
who knows.  but i bet you feel good listening to them!

If this sounds like it’s lost in the 90s somewhere…. Well that’s exactly where it came from!  It’s another remake from the old diskettes. And this one was pretty fully formed with parts for guitars, bass, drums, organ, trumpets and melody for lyrics that were never written.  

Whilst the ‘back catalogue’ from school and university is typically split between electronic and indie / band music - normally the indie band stuff was pretty indie dance rather than a more classic rock style and arrangement.  This one’s definitely pure-bred indie rock!! 

I kept as much of the original midi as possible - even the ridiculously overblown drum fill ins every couple of seconds!! Thanks to loopcloud for more excellent vocal samples that seem to just fit perfectly. Though there’s about 10 layers of vocals with lots of harmonies and counter melodies going on. Which took an age and hundreds of mix downs to sound ok.  Thanks to waves processing on those. 

Guitars are a mix of live recording with strum from AAS for the acoustics 12 string. Most of the other sounds are kontakt with omnisohere adding a few bits of aural candy here and there.

this track was originally written in c1992 with my good friend Nic Hemley.  It was written with a roland sh101 and juno 106.  i don't think we realised what iconic bits of kit we had in our possession at the time.  (Nic sold them about a month later for a couple of hundred pounds, so I guess not). 

a proper rave-tastic breakbeat / jungle / d&b piece of derivative fun.  with rave92 era pianos and dodgy samples from famous films that might get you in trouble.

remade in 2023/2024 completely from scratch.  All i had was a cassette of the original, which i'd sensibly made into a wav file about 15 years ago.  (as i no longer have the cassettes!)

roland cloud helped a lot of course, as did omnisphere.  loopcloud gave some vocals and loops.  arturia vocoder added some extra vocal touches.  
kept it short and sharp - an energy burst from the 90s to recharge your senses!

I use a desktop computer to compose music using sampled sounds from Vienna Symphonic Library.  Thise are plugged into Steinberg's  Cubase 11 (like a word processor for sounds). I practice daily at  improvisation on an M-Audio 88 Keyboard controller interfaced to the whole shebang via Mark of the Unicorn's Micro Lite Midi port.
