"Frankenstein"

"Frankenstein" had its world premiere at the 2024 Venice International Film Festival and later screened at the Telluride and Toronto International Film Festivals. It received positive reviews for its direction and adaptation by Guillermo del Toro of Mary Shelley's beloved, iconic novel, as well as incredible craftsmanship from all areas of production, and performances from Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, and Mia Goth. Members of the cast and crew were kind enough to spend some time speaking with members of Next Best Picture over the past few weeks, which you can listen to below. First, we have Nadia Dalimonte speaking with del Toro, Isaac, and Elordi. Then, we have Daniel Howat's interview with cinematographer Dan Laustsen, followed by Ema Sasic's interview with Costume Designer Kate Hawley. Then we have Will Mavity's interview with the film's Prosthetics Designer, Mike Hill, followed by Howat's interview with composer Alexandre Desplat, and Sasic's interview with production designer Tamara Deverell. Then we return to Nadiaas she speaks with Mia Goth to close things out. Another classic Gothic horror is remade for the modern age: first we saw Robert Eggers' Nosferatu, and now Guillermo del Toro brings us his adaptation of Frankenstein. Like Nosferatu, Frankenstein is astonishing to look at, and, like Nosferatu, also written by its director, it probably would have benefitted from the attention of a professional screenwriter. Still, it's a pleasure to spend time in the word del Toro envisions, and we talk wide angle lenses, the range of performances - Oscar Isaac's busy, Jacob Elordi's brooding, Mia Goth's underwhelming - the difficulty of understanding dialogue in screen two at the Mockingbird, and what this Frankenstein thematically shares with One Battle After Another.

Sticking closer to Mary Shelley's novel than most other adaptations, Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein is the culmination of a lifelong dream. His vision echoes the gothic maximalism of Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula, starring Jacob Elordi as a sympathetic interpretation of Frankenstein's Creature. But does this movie measure up to GDT's past hits? Steffan and Gavia have mixed feelings, delving into the film's characterization choices, production values, and relationship with the novel.
