Hi, how are you? Daniel Johnstons (*1961) Zeichnung „Jeremiah the Frog of Innosense“ ziert nicht nur das 1983 veröffentlichte Album, sondern ist auch seit Jahrzehnten als meter hohes Graffito in Austin, Texas zu entdecken. Kurt Cobain trug es als T-Shirt bei den MTV Music Awards und machte so Daniel Johnston einem breiten internationalen Publikum bekannt. Neben dem Nirvana Frontman sind es aber auch andere Künstler wie Beck, Sonic Youth, Sufjan Stevens und viele andere die in Johnston eine große Inspiration sehen. Your favorite artist’s favorite artist.

Doch woher kommt das, was macht die Musik Johnstons so besonders? Für mich ist es die auch schon in letzter Episode beschriebene Intimität, die insbesondere auf seinen frühen Kassetten Veröffentlichungen zu spüren ist. Aufgenommen in der Garage seines Bruders spielt Johnston zwischen Beatles Covern auf Piano oder Chord Organ von zutiefst persönlichen Erfahrungen und beweist dabei ein wundervolles Gespür für Melodie und Lyrik. Der manisch veranlagte Johnston vervielfältigt dabei nicht seine Alben, sondern spielt (zumindest noch zu Beginn) jede einzelne Kassette gesondert ein! Da er abgesehen vom familiären Klavierunterricht keine musikalische Ausbildung genoss, und auch die Aufnahmebedingungen alles andere als ideal waren, mag dieses Gespür vielleicht beim ersten Hören nicht so recht durchscheinen -sie sind im wahrsten Sinne Low Fidelity- doch auch ohne Vorliebe für diesen Sound können seine Texte sehr berühren. Spätestens wenn oben genannte Künstler Johnstons Lieder covern und „professionell“ einspielen wird klar was für ein herausragender Songwriter er war. Bei seinen ersten live Konzerten wechselte er dann überraschenderweise zur Gitarre, er wolle schließlich Rockstar werden, was seinen Sound nochmals schroffer werden ließ, ihn allerdings in der Alternative Rock Szene Texas und den USA zu einer Szene-Bekanntheit werden lies und die Dinge ihren Lauf nahmen. Zur selben Zeit, etwa Mitte 20, manifestierte sich leider auch Johnstons psychische Krankheit die ihn sein restliches Leben begleiten sollte. Zwischen stationären Aufenthalten schaffte er es weiterhin, auch in Kooperation mit weiteren Künstlern, zu musizieren und zeichnen. Die starke Medikation schränkte ihn fortan körperlich stark ein, so dass er wieder bei seinen Eltern in Waller, Texas lebte wo er am 11.September 2019 verstarb. Diese Sendung gibt einen Überblick über die gesamte Schaffenszeit des Künstlers.

Den herrausragenden Dokumentationsfilm The Devil And Daniel Johnston (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJZOe65eA4Y) von 2005 möchte ich hier noch empfehlen. Der mit vielen Archivaufnahmen entstandene Film zeigt nicht nur einen sehr liebevollen Einblick in das Familienleben der Johnstons sondern bildet auch ganz schön Daniels Einfluss auf die alternative Musikszene ab.

I've become addicted to drone. Again. I was the kid with his head on the piano, listening to the overtones die away, or pressing his ear to the steel hull of the ferry, enthralled by the sounds it created. I was the kid who formed wordless songs to accompany the sound of train wheels on a long journey, or hummed along with the fan on a hot day.

In the 60s I used to play my 45s on 16, or backwards, or by hand using razor blades as stylii.

I made cut-up tapes on a cheap cassette recorder in the 70s and experimented with reel-to-reel in the 80s.
