The Best Cicadas

As graduation approached this year, students around the country began protests after calls for divestment from Israel were initially ignored by university leadership. The campus encampments were met with physical violence and the mainstream press dismissed the students' demands as naive and immature. But, it turns out that there's a lot we should be asking about college endowments. 
We take a look at what an endowment is and how they’re invested. Then we learn why transparency around the endowment (and divestment!) might actually benefit the entire college community. 
We talk to Kelly Grotke, a financial researcher from Pattern Recognition, a research collective focused on financialized higher education. And, with Andrea Pritchett, we look at the links between the encampments today, and those from the 80s, when students protested South African Apartheid.

Tears Of Palestine

Today, nine months after Palestine Fair Trade stall was banned from the West end markets for displaying a map of disappearing Palestine the International Court of Justice (ICJ) rulling on the illegal occupation of Palestine has vindicated the vendors action of displaying the map that shows the illegal occupation of Palestine from 1948 to this day. The Palestine Fair Trade stall holders did nothing wrong. The people who came out to support Palestine Fair Trade in Australia made the right decision to go out to the West End markets on the 28th October and were justified in their support, and we hope that people will see that the ICJ decision provides some level of consolation that the truth will always prevail.

ICJ rules on Disappearing Palestine

Full speech by lawyer on ICJ ruling ... On the 28th of October last year, exactly nine months ago to this day, a group of us went to West End to support the Palestine Fair Trade stall, which, at the time had been forced to set up outside the bounds of the west end markets after it received a notice to withdraw the contract to sell at those markets.

Lawyer analyses ICJ ruling on Occupied Palestine

International lawyer Kristen Zornada focuses on the significance of international law in stopping the genocide. She highlighted various violations of international law by Israel, including misappropriation and delegitimization, and discussed the potential for UN accountability. Describes experiences of colonization and oppression of people from southern Italy, and advocates for pressure and sanctions to force Israel to comply with international law. Her speechalso touched on the global nature of the issue and the importance of solidarity.

Kristen Zornada challenges mainstream over genocide

Interview with Palestinian lawyer and author, Raja Shehadeh, by Nathan Thrall from the New Yorker radio hour under the title of 'Israel's other intractable conflict.'

The genocide is discussed under the trope of 'Israeli-Palestinian conflict', thus focussing on the fears and motivations of both sides, the lack of progress in the peace process, and the potential for a lasting resolution (read 'two-state solution'). 

The interviewer from the New Yorker highlights the importance of acknowledging the legitimacy of both nations and the need for a two-state solution. 

Raja Shehadeh shares his family's Nakba experience of being driven out of Jaffa in Palestine in 1948 and the significance of 'sumud' (staying put) in the face of Israeli policies. 

Interviewer, Nathan Thrall, notes a 'shift in sentiment' among Palestinians, with some viewing Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar as a hero.

What does Israel fear from Palestine?

The Australian government has, in the past, defunded and threatened to defund  organizations which have a supportive association with BDS. Any such detriment or threat of detriment is to render aid or assistance to Israel and is unlawful.  

BDS Rally
The Justice for Palestine Magan-djin rally on August 11, 2024, marked the 310th day of the genocide in Gaza, with speakers highlighting the severe violence and the role of the U.S. in supplying munitions. Key points included the economic impact of boycotts, divestments, and sanctions such as Intel freezing a $2.5 billion factory in Israel and Samsung shutting down its Tel Aviv operation. The movement has seen significant successes, including a $69 million divestment from Caterpillar. Speakers emphasized the need for comprehensive sanctions and grassroots activism, urging continued support for the Palestinian struggle for freedom and justice.

Omar Ashour on BDS
Omar Ashour from Falasteen Inc emphasized that BDS is a non-violent form of protest aimed at exposing and isolating businesses and institutions that support the occupation. BDS is a Palestinian-led movement inspired by the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa. The movement seeks to end international support for Israel's oppression of Palestinians and pressure Israel to comply with international law.

Hailing from Los Angeles is the incredibly gifted rapper and artist, Ciscokid who has been busy carving out a name for himself thanks to his unique lyrical ﬂow and original rhymes. Ciscokid  skillfully brings listeners into his own world through his masterful storytelling and composition techniques.
