Every second, a muon particle shoots through your body. An invisible cosmic messenger at 299,726 km/second. A muon forms when a proton flying through space, hits the earth’s atmosphere at 99.9% the speed of light and breaks down into its subatomic components. The source of these protons is largely unknown but most likely come from supernovae explosions, millions, or even billions of light years away. Muons are part of the ancient, native language of matter that makes up everything in existence yet are invisible to human perception. The µ Muography device invites these muons into a collaborative art process, making their presence visible through a variety of creative outcomes including image making, sound and performance works, becoming active (non-human) agents in art production. The muons act as a strange new language form, a signalling from the distant universe.

Muon Sample Mix

Particle physicist Flavia de Almeida Dias helps us understand the fundamental building blocks of the universe. Working from CERN in Switzerland and Nikhef in Amsterdam, she knows all about elementary particles and how to make them visible to humanity, that has been interested in this since the ancient Greek's four elements: water, fire, earth and air. What are the elements of today? And how can we find more of them? These questions and a lot more are discussed in this month's episode.

The Neutrino Blues - All Demos Together

DARK MATTERS is an exhibition in collaboration with Arts at CERN and the ARC Centre of Excellence for Dark Matter Particle Physics. The exhibition aims to explore the fundamental essence of life and the universe, and how so much of it remains a mystery to us. 

Deep dive into the unseen, the unknown and the unspoken – will we ever fully understand the forces at play in our own lives, both on an individual level and on a planetary and universal scale? Dark matter consists of a mysterious substance that does not present an interaction with electromagnetic forces, which means it does not absorb, reflect it, or emit light. In an era defined by the power of modelling data, technology and simulations, the search for dark matter can be seen as a symbol of the limits of our cognitive experience – how might it help us imagine new possibilities for life, and our relationships with non-human entities or systems?

Through local and international experimental projects – some developed in conversation with scientists and researchers – explore life and all the dark matter that flows through it, under it and collides with it.

DARK MATTERS is co-curated by Mónica Bello, Head of Arts at CERN and Tilly Boleyn, Head of Curatorial at Science Gallery Melbourne in collaboration with a curatorial panel of young people.

Right now, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the most powerful particle accelerator/collider ever built. Accelerating protons up to 299,792,455 m/s, just 3 m/s shy of the speed of light, they smash together at energies of 14 TeV, creating all sorts of new particles (and antiparticles) from raw energy, leveraging Einstein's famous E = mc² in an innovative way. By building detectors around the collision points, we can uncover all sorts of properties about any known particles and potentially discover new particles as well, as the LHC did for the Higgs boson back in the early 2010s.

But the LHC has a limited lifetime, and by the 2030s, will complete its data-taking runs. If we want to go beyond the LHC, we need to start planning for a new particle collider now, and there are four great options that can take us beyond the current frontier: a linear lepton collider, a circular lepton collider, a circular hadron collider, and a potentially new innovation of a circular muon collider. In this episode of the Starts With A Bang podcast, Dr. Cari Cesarotti joins us to discuss all of these options and much more, as we look ahead to the future of particle physics.

The serious question isn't whether we should build one (we definitely should), but which approach will be most fruitful in pushing our suite of knowledge beyond the known frontiers. There's an entire Universe to explore at the subatomic level, and those of us curious about the Universe want to know what's out there better than ever before! What is dark matter? Mary Westover investigates, featuring insights from Dr. Joe McLaughlin and Dr. Marcello Messina. She visits the Gran Sasso Laboratory in Italy to understand how a research lab sunk deep into a mountain and holding a giant tank of liquid Xenon holds the promise of evidence for this most elusive substance. From the lab's mountain setting to the complex physics involved, this episode provides a deep dive into one of physics’ most perplexing questions.
