Paul Presents Friends of Newtown Rd Cemetery with Roz Clow. 
The Friends were set up in association with Newbury Town Council to help restore the cemetery to its former glory after it was closed in 2000 on health and safety grounds. In the subsequent years, the Friends have undertaken may tasks including assisting with nature surveys and providing information and pictures for display boards.
We are also undertaking a full memorial recording programme to ensure that the information on all the memorials is preserved on the web site where everyone can access it.
Our History Research Group is actively searching through old documents and certificates to try and find out as much as possible about every single person buried there.

Helen is the young carer project worker for West Berkshire Council.
Young carers are children and young people under 18 who take on caring tasks and responsibilities within their family that most of us only do as adults.
The term does not apply to the everyday and occasional help around the home that may often be expected of children in families.
The person you care for could be a parent, grandparent, a brother, sister or a family friend.

The person you look after may have a physical disability, a progressive disease, a mental health difficulty or a substance misuse problem.

It can be rewarding to care and help your family cope, but you should still be able to relax and have some fun, which is what West Berkshire's Young Carers Project is all about.

This week on Paul Presents Paul Chats to Lucy about Newbury Riding for the Disabled (RDA) and her role a as Trustee Lucy became a Trustee in 2023 and in September 2024 she took over as Chair of the Trustee’s Lucy grew up riding and volunteered for the RDA whilst at school. Also she is a keen supporter of equine therapy charities.
 Newbury Riding for the Disabled (RDA) is a Group of the national RDA charitable organisation.They are a self-supporting voluntary organisation dedicated to enabling local children with special needs improve their physical and emotional wellbeing through riding horses. Over 60 children ride with them at Wyld Court in Hampstead Norreys each week during term time.

Released in 2000, the film is an adaptation of the 'American Psycho' novel by Bret Easton Ellis that is meant to be a grisly, satirical critique of 1980s corporate culture. Lizzie lives in Newbury and she is passionate about sharing music-making with young children - you're never too young to start. Lizzie is fascinated by the positive effect music can have on a childs development because it can bring so much joy and fun, it's an especially powerful tool for learning and development.

Paul chats with Jonathon Sayers about West Berkshire Rambler group was founded on March 2, 1967, at its inaugural meeting. The group was originally known as The Newbury and District Group and changed its name to West Berkshire Ramblers in 1985. 

Nowadays they are one of nine groups based in Berkshire and our official territory for membership purposes is the west of the county up to approximately a line just east of Thatcham. However, any Ramblers member can ask to be assigned to us wherever they live.

They kicked off in 1967 organising two walks per month but the programme has steadily evolved and they now average between four and five walks per week over the year as a whole. Many of the walks are within our home territory but often venture further afield, including by coach in the summer months and also arrange group holidays and social events.

They have held occasional ad hoc work parties almost from when they were formed. and in 2003 our regular fortnightly Friday path inspection / maintenance work parties evolved from this. They also have a group that turns out 12 or so times a year to install gates on paths in the area - this has been running since 2004.

As a Ramblers group they are of course also involved in actively campaigning on footpath and countryside matters and regularly respond to things like diversion proposals and planning applications that have the potential to impact the walking environment.
Other activities over the years have included the publication of a number of books of local walks and helping with the development of walking routes such as the Lambourn Valley Way. The books page on their website has details of the walks books that are still in print and how to purchase copies.
