As we get ready to start the school year again, God reminds us to carry compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience in our backpacks. This week, Ben Reeves, one of our college students, explores how God gives us the opportunity to transform our living backpack from messy into a living backpack organized with what God wants for us. This Sunday, we launch a new year of ministry, celebrating the truth that every person matters in the body of Christ. Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 12 remind us that the Church is a living body, each part unique, each part needed, each part connected. Belonging isn’t about “fitting in,” but about bringing our authentic selves, trusting that God has given each of us a vital role. In "A Place to Belong, A Call to Become", Pastor Reeves shows us that belonging is just the beginning. God calls us to grow, to serve, and to become more fully the body of Christ— together.

We pray for the church so that we would be known not for judgment, but for grace. Not for fear, but for love. Not for exclusion but for welcome. Our prayer is that we be reminded that the church is about community. Open our eyes to all the ways we are spiritually bent over, and how we define ourselves and others. Where do you usually sit at the table? In a cafeteria, at a banquet, or even in church, we often assume that the place we occupy says something about our importance or our worth. But the way of Jesus is different. In Luke 14:7–14, He reminds us that God’s Kingdom turns our expectations upside down. The seating chart is rewritten—not by status, wealth, or influence—but by grace. With Jesus, everyone has a place of belonging, honor, and welcome at the table. This week, Pastor Reeves shares this powerful message from Scripture and helps us see how Christ calls us to live with humility, generosity, and open arms for all.

Many of us are comfortable walking alongside Jesus—listening to his words, admiring his example, and appreciating his presence. But the gospel calls us to take a deeper step, to move from simply traveling with Jesus to actually living as his disciples. What does that shift look like in the way we care for our families, in the choices we make with our possessions, and in the way we shape our everyday lives? This week, Pastor Reeves leads us through Luke 14:25-33 so we may reflect on these questions together, remembering that the One who calls us has already gone before us, surrendering everything so that we can live.

This week, Pastor Reeves shares a message from Luke 15:1–10 titled “In Between Lost and Found.” We all know what it feels like to live in that space—not fully lost, but not quite found either; not rejected, but not fully received. In this passage, Jesus tells a story about a shepherd who never gives up searching until every sheep is safe. It’s a reminder that no one is expendable and each of us is worth finding. Stay with us as we hear good news about a God who risks everything to bring us home—and who celebrates with joy when we are found.

Out of all of Jesus’ parables, half are about money. Today, Pastor Owens helps us examine one of the most perplexing passages about worldly possessions. In Luke 16:1-13, Jesus tells a surprising story of a dishonest manager who suddenly faces an audit.  Caught in his dishonesty, the manager scrambles to secure his future by reducing the debts of others, hoping to gain their favor. It may seem like a puzzling parable, but Jesus uses it to remind us of a deeper truth. That we are not owners, but stewards.  Everything we have -- our time, our gifts, our resources -- is entrusted to us for a season.

This Sunday at Grace, Pastor Reeves will be sharing a message titled “Passing the Vision Test.” Together, we’ll explore how Jesus invites us to retrain our eyes and our hearts—to notice the people God places right in front of us. In a world that so easily numbs us with busyness or indifference, Christ opens our vision to something greater: to see people the way God sees them. It’s a vision that crosses gates, calls people by name, and practices heaven’s way of love right here and now. This week, as Advent begins, we’re invited to step into the world where the Christmas story first unfolded—a world “in the time of King Herod,” where uncertainty, fear, and longing shaped everyday life. 
Zechariah, an elderly priest, had watched his homeland fall under Roman rule. He carried both a nation’s ache and his own private hopes. And in Lamentations, we hear another voice crying out in personal pain while a whole people struggle under oppression. Scripture reminds us that global turmoil and personal heartache often sit side by side—and the wait for God’s promised rescue can feel unbearably long.

But into those places of fear and longing, God speaks. And God draws near.

Today, Pastor Nancy leads us through Luke 1:5–13 and Lamentations 3:55–57 as we begin this holy season of expectation. We’ll reflect on the hope that breaks through even in the hardest seasons, and on the God who meets us precisely where we are.

This second week in Advent, Pastor Jan Alexander invites us to listen again to the story of John the Baptist, when he asks an honest question from prison: “Are you the one?” It’s a question we ask, too, when life grows heavy, and the path ahead feels unclear. 

Jesus doesn’t offer easy answers to John. He points to quiet signs of God already at work: healing, restoration, new life breaking in just as Isaiah promised. As we begin this week, may we also look for those small signs of grace and remember that our hope — and our work — truly matter.
