The Gobbler’s Seat on Constitution Hill

(A song inspired by a picture of  that Great Irish singer/musician, Daoirí Farrell, sitting on the ‘Gobbler’s Seat. In the ‘Temple’ park on Constitution Hill.)


On a seat that would swallie ye up, 
Yer lunch an’ yer flask an’ yer cup.
In a place where de keep all the moth-eaten deeds
And the benchers exhibit the first of all greeds 
Ah! The taste of the bitter pill,
On auld Constitution Hill!

Once it was Glasmanogue
The road that led up to the north
Through Finglas to Slane, it was quickly plied 
By a king who once hurried there for a ride
They say that his oats are there still,
Straight up Constitution Hill!  

The ‘Temple’ when we were kids,
Where Carson and Pearse spent their lids!
And were well fitted out in the wig and gown,
Taking an oath to the Queen and the crown!
Oh! that was the bitter pill,
On Constitution Hill!

That auld seat could tell many’s the story
Of love, and murder most gory!
Every auld fella’s arse, from the Morning Star,
Biding their time till they got their jar,
All that time that they had to kill,
On Constitution Hill!

In the street that the Dubs call Greek,
It was cast and polished till sleek!
In the foundry fire with the flames of hell,
The same that cast every cross and bell
Adjacent to the Pill,
Near Constitution Hill! 

O they say it’s the bench of the devil,
Sucked into the tree, unlevel,
And once a poor man sitting there after dark
Soon found his shoulders enveloped in bark
Of the tree that bore him ill
On Constitution Hill!

All ballad singers beware when they sing
Of the bench that is the devil’s own thing 
They dread to sit down for a photograph,
For fear they might hear that hideous laugh 
From the bench that gives many a chill,
On Constitution Hill!
