I wrote this poem following the ratification of H.R. 4900 PROMESA, a devastating colonial bill imposed by U.S. Congress upon Puerto Rico that installs an unelected board of global financiers in control of the island's governmental machinations, ushering in a new era of colonial rule.

I "blacked out" the voluminous bill, writing over it, to ultimately compose this (palimp)sestina, repeating the most prevalent words that appear across the document. An older version of this poem was selected by Carmen Jimenez and published on the Academy of American Poetry's Poem-a-Day series in late 2018. 

I imagined perform this text as a curse, calling for the law's abolition, liberation and reparations for Puerto Rico (after over a century of colonial rule) and all victims of U.S. imperialism.

And in each for such as fall to board
reduced to liquid dispute over sight
the term means and the term means
territory the term me- island budget,
its sole discretion reports instrument
pursuant to paragraph or subsection
 
session the public powers by section

with respect to Puerto Rico its budget
with respect to the budget the meaning

The Blood of a Patriot - Taliesin Williams

I stand, slumped close, to the cold, damp earth
I press my head, to the stock of my gun,
The blood in my ears, is thunder through the rush
Of bullets that continuously slam through the mud.

And then there it is, the whistle of fate,
The lych bell that calls me up into the fray.
One heave and I’m over, both feet beneath mud,
I unsling Winchester and start to see blood,

But then I look over, to the man on the left,
A father of three, with a wife and no head,
For the blood stains that stain my leather-bound chest,
Is the blood of a patriot, the blood of the dead.

He’s there for a second, just frozen in time.
His icy eyes judging, looking deep into mine,
And then he is gone, buried deep under foot,
I turn to face forwards; I raise up to shoot.

But he is still staring, though I don’t know from where,
I let lose one bullet, it rips through the air,
And it hits, dead on target; Between two blue cold eyes,
I watch them go glassy; I watch as he dies.

I watch as he’s buried, under mud, under foot,
He watches me charge, as I raise up to shoot.
But my trigger won’t move, though the gun isn’t jammed
The hammer not sprung; I can’t move my hand.

And I waited too long, too long to shoot,
The hole in my chest, leaking blood on my boots,
And then I fall forwards, my eyes rolling back
My friends keep on charging, they pursue and attack,

And leave me there, face down, buried in mud,
My eyes are both glassy and covered in blood,
Forgotten to all but the men that I killed,
Their bodies now rotting, in graves that I filled.

The Sounds of War

I don’t know if you have ever heard the sounds of war
The screeching, screaming sirens, that pound against your door
And even when the raid is done the threat will never be,
For the silent sounds are louder than any artillery 

And even in the dead of night, when everything is calm
The silent sounds hang over you, a perpetual alarm.
A constant ring of warning that is called out by the dark
A heavy threat that pummels you, “will this day be my last?”

But the sounds of war reach further than the radius of bombs
They echo in your children, in your wife, your dad, your mom
They thunder through the cities through the cries of all you love
They’re carried all across the world in the mouth of Satan’s dove.

I don’t know if you have ever heard the sounds of war 
The cries and shrieks of children and the weeps of those who mourn 
And even when the battle's won the war will never be
For the sounds of war will stay with you for all eternity.

The Light Warrior

Verse 1:
I am a warrior of the Light, 
shielded by love,
With a sword of faith
, shining bright above,
A beacon in the sea, 
a lighthouse in the night,
Guiding seekers to truth, 
where darkness takes flight.
 
In a world where promises fade like mist,
Our ancestors knew words held magic, not to be dismissed,
I carry their legacy, where truth and honor meet,
In this age of deception, I stand firm, my heart beats.

I'm a Light Warrior, breaking through the night,
With love as my shield, faith my guiding light,
Through trials and lessons, I grow, align with destiny,
Falling, rising, fighting for the light and our freedom's plea.
 
Verse 2:
Challenges abound, yet I embrace,
Every stumble, every fall, strengthens my grace,
For in this time of transformation, I chose to be,
An anchor of light in humanity's journey to see.
 
When darkness veils the earth, dawn's light I await,
Knowing the greatest dawn follows the darkest state,
I'm not alone, surrounded by light beings near and far,
United in purpose, we shine, warriors of the cosmic star.

Patrick is singer & composer, voice actor and multimedia producer.
He studied Music at the University of Bristol, followed by a Masters in Composition for Film and TV.
