Brave New Art, Episode 11: Jennifer Whitcomb-Oliva and Sarah Saturday

Ritual abounds in death, offering a space to process, acknowledge and mourn. In this opening chapter of Divinatory Strategies, artists Rubiane Maia, Daniella Valz Gen and Soojin Chang discuss practices of channelling, their ways of working with and through memory, ancestral healing and communion, belonging, and the kinship between spiritual practitioners and artists. Emerging from these conversations, hosted by Joseph Morgan Schofield, is an articulation of ritual/art as something which has a vital and affirming function in dealing with human experiences of dislocation, alienation and grief.

QUEER FERALITY

Body horror master filmmaker David Cronenberg is back with a new body horror film! After spending most of the 2000s making excellent non-body horror movies, he's returned to his roots for a dark cinematic voyage of sex & surgery called Crimes of the Future. We were all fans of Cronenberg to varying degrees, and we talk about his filmography before entering this futuristic tale starring Viggo Mortensen, Lea Seydoux, and Kristen Stewart. Definitely not a podcast episode or movie for the weak of stomach, we'll spoil all the grisly details of the Salad Dragon scenes, of which there are many!

Give Sodomy a Chance is a LGBTQIA+ tribute that makes explicit reference to Supreme Court Justice Bryon White’s comment, in Bowers v. Hardwick (1986), that there’s no fundamental right to sodomy. Arguing to the contrary is Give Sodomy A Chance. It was composed by Paul R. Abramson (lyrics), James Cruce (music) and Bobby Pollard (music). It is being performed by Crying 4 Kafka. Paul Abramson (vocals), James Cruce (drums), Paul du Gre (bass), Danny McGough (keyboards), and Bobby Pollard (guitar). It was produced and recorded by Paul du Gre at Paul & Mike’s Studio in Burbank, California, 2022.

Give Sodomy A Chance

For this publication I first developed a performance which incorporated a sound piece, a self built instrument, four active participants and several others to document the happening.
After the performance – which took place during a workshop at the Bauhaus Foundation in Dessau – I developed a screenplay which was then designed and printed.
