Matthew Flinders Anglican College Principal Michelle Carroll is joined by Andy Fraser, the Director of Dramatic Arts at Flinders.

Andy brings more than 30 years of experience to his role at Flinders, including working with major arts companies the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, Black Swan State Theatre Company and West Australian Opera.

In this conversation, Michelle and Andy explore the benefits of offering a robust dramatic arts program as a co-curricular opportunity for students across the Primary and Secondary years. 

Andy explains the pathways and opportunities for students to explore their passion, gain industry skills and grow their confidence and character. 

He also shares the 5 core values students are encouraged to bring to their dramatic arts journey – and why ‘having talent’ isn’t on the list!

Sell Me: I am From North Korea
SELL ME follows 15-year-old Jisun, a North Korean girl who decides to sell herself to an old Chinese man to make money for her mother’s medication. After risking her life by crossing the Tumen River into China, Jisun learns her malnourished, underdeveloped body is not wanted. She finds herself having to make her own way on the streets, struggling in a merciless foreign land where her very existence is illegal. Inspired by the journeys of many North Korean women defectors, SELL ME portrays the everyday lives and impossible choices made by those living in North Korea, too often overlooked and distorted by Western media.

Sora Baek
Sora Baek is an award winning actor, playwright, and producer from South Korea. She has been featured on the Korea Times, News 12 NJ, and Voice of America. Select acting theatre credits include: SELL ME: I am from North Korea (the US Capitol Center), The Storm, A Christmas Carol, and Sworn Virgin (NYC and International Tour) with Blessed Unrest and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf (Calaveras Repertory Theatre). She received a Best Actress Award at the Epidemic Film Festival in San Francisco. Sora has been working with Only Make Believe which brings interactive theatre to children with disabilities over 15 years.

*Sora’s grandparents fled the North during the Korean war with her father when he was only four years old. She grew up in a small South Korean town across the river from North Korea, looking out at the empty ghost buildings. Sora’s writing and research into the lives of North Korean defectors were born out of her family’s inability to return home, the pain caused to many innocent families by the war that divided the two countries, and the pain many have since continued to live through. She presents this performance for her father, her grandfather, and all those who cannot go home.

Edinburgh Festival 2024 Series  - Ep 211: Sell Me: I am From North Korea

This week on "Radio Architecture with Ilana Razbash", Ilana's special guest is Deborah Leiser-Moore - Performance Maker, Performer, Director, and Lecturer.

Deborah was a core member of the physical performance company, Entr’acte Theatre (Sydney), and has trained in Japan with Tadashi Suzuki (and has taught the work for many years), in Rasaboxes with Richard Schechner, and in the Furan performance language as taught by ex La Fura dels Baus member, Younes Bachir (with whom she has collaborated many times).

Deborah has created/written her own performance works as well as having worked within various companies. Her recent works include directing a contemporary version of Lorca’s Blood Wedding for the JMC graduating acting ensemble at St Martins Theater and co-created/directed This is Me This is Us with the JMC Performance Ensemble, presented at 2023 Melbourne Fringe. She performed in/co-created the promenade performance work, Day After Terrible Day, with Danger Ensemble, directed by Stephen Mitchel-Wright and presented at Theatre Works. She directed/co-created unHOWsed, in which eight older ex-homeless women shared their experiences of homelessness, for Theatre Works St Kilda’s main season. In September 2020 the filmed version played in competition at the 2020 Cairo International Festival of Experiment Theatre, in 2021 it was presented at Drum Theatre, Dandenong, in 2022 at ProAct Festival, Kyiv, Ukraine and in 2023 at the Alabama International Fringe Festival’s digital program.

My guest this month is Mike Fiorito. An Adjunct Professor of English at City Tech (CUNY), Mike is a freelance journalist and author of several books: For All We Know, Mescalito Riding His White Horse, Falling from Trees, The Hated Ones, Sleeping with Fishes, Call Me Guido, Freud’s Haberdashery Habits, and Hallucinating Huxley. 

Mescalito Riding His White Horse received the 2024 Independent Press Distinguished Favorite Award in Spirituality. 

Falling from Trees received the 2022 Independent Press Distinguished Favorite Award in Short Stories. 

For All We Know, his UFO themed science-fiction novel, published in May 2024.

Mike’s new book, UFO Symphonic-Journeys into Sound, was published February 1st, 2025. 

UFO Symphonic: Journeys into Sound explores the profound connection between music and the mysteries of existence. The book delves into music as a form of complex communication and a potential bridge to other realms. Through personal accounts and stories from experiencers, Fiorito examines the symbolic language of sound, dreams, and high strangeness. It invites readers on an extraordinary journey into the unknown, raising thought-provoking questions about the role of music in connecting past, present, and future.

In this discussion, Mike and I talk about his latest book, and Mike shares several anecdotes from different people that Mike interviewed. Some highlights from this conversation include:

-          the concept of “The Harmony of the Spheres” that emphasizes the interconnectedness of the cosmos and the spiritual journey of the soul; the main idea of which is that the cosmos is ordered by mathematical principles, and that planets and stars move in harmony with these principles, producing a kind of eternal music;

-         How the stories Mike shared bring up a lot of ideas related to the notion of ‘tapping into’ a larger system (that we might call consciousness, or cosmos; additionally, it seems to be suggesting a type of mind-universe alignment;

-         Joshua Cutchin’s story about creating a new narrative that combines folklore and UFO phenomena; and the connection between paranormal phenomena and death (which lines up beautifully with a book we read for our prior Patreon book club meeting -- Dr. Jeff Kripal and Whitley Strieber’s book, The Super Natural: A New Vision of the Unexplained. In the Dedication, Whitley Strieber notes that his wife Anne said, after carefully reading and organizing the numerous letters that they received, that the UFO experiences all had something to do with death, too.);

-         Sebastiano De Filippi’s section, who also discusses similar ideas to Joshua’s about music in his work as a conductor;

-         Concepts such as entanglement and tulpas; and much more!
