New Fear (2025)

This week's theme for Sublime Saturdays was "The Sounds of Photography." The first thing that came to mind was exposure; like that on a runway or a catwalk. It inspired me to daydream a mix I would like to hear on a runway. Unlike the 80s theme from a couple of weeks ago, I did not plan the mix, but I certainly had a sound in mind. Beware the technical times in the second track; but, other than that, it fulfilled the mission.

Operating in the Fiona Apple / Dirty Projectors sphere of the alternative music spectrum, Nicole Saphos is known for her harmonically bold and rhythmically driven original music. To date, the LA-native, Philadelphia based artist has released three critically acclaimed albums, and has performed at venerated venues such as The Kennedy Center, Smithsonian American Art Museum and Rockwood Music Hall.

As the son of a professional flamenco singer, Thomas has always been surrounded by music.  Exposure to flamenco influenced him because it has a dynamic range of emotions—from the "deep singing" style of cante hondo, to the more lively alegrias.  He has also worked in the corporate, independent, and online music industry for a number of years.  At one point he was a Content Manager for the Electronic Music genre at MP3.com, where he screened over 500 songs per day.  Exposure to a wide range of music explains the range of genres in his mixes—he uses whatever carries the mood.  From listening to Umm Kulthum's "Enta Omri" in his childhood, to New Wave and  Industrial as a teen, it became difficult for him to stick to one sound. Though vinyl was his original format of choice when he started in the 90s, the use of digital mixing has helped him better form soundscapes to expand your headspace.  Let him play with your moods for a spell.
