In November 2014, the Pitt Rivers Museum hosted 'Northern Lights' - a torchlit adventure through the Museum's darkened galleries exploring snow goggles, miniature ivory sleds and seal gut parkas. They were accompanied by a soundtrack featuring author Philip Pullman reading excerpts from his book 'Northern Lights'; museum staff talking about Arctic objects on display; polar sounds such as icy winds, kayaks in the surf, and the calls of whales and wolves; plus samples of indigenous music – old and new – including Inuit and Tuvan throat singing, contemporary Evenki songs, Scandinavian fusion, and Finnish folk. The night finished with an eclectic ethnic electronic mix. Created by Alistair Orr (Pitt Rivers Museum) with support from Alison Cooper (University of Surrey).
