This is a soundscape created as part of an exhibition at Bishop Auckland Town Hall, to sit alongside Elaine Vizor's photographs.

Connection to place is important to many of us. There’s a complexity at play between individuals and the physical landscape they inhabit, and this shapes both the people, and their environment. 

Places become directly linked to our recollections and experiences, whether those are of happy childhood memories visiting on holiday, or working the land all year round – and everything in between. They’re part of the fabric that makes us who we are – they reflect our values and traditions, they are the woven with the stories of the communities that shape them. 

In A Sense of Place, you’ll hear the voices of women speaking about their unique connection to the North Pennines. From Catherine Massiter’s life-long love affair with Holwick where news of her birth was first announced, to the daily joys and struggles of hill farm life with Anna Wood and her daughter Elizabeth. 

I hope you enjoy the journey of these incredibly extraordinary women, and this incredibly extraordinary place.
