The Fontanavecchia winery is located in the town of Torrecuso, in the Campania region of Italy, at the foot of Mount Taburno in the Sannio Beneventano area. The historic wine cellars of Fontanavecchia were founded by the Rillo in the 19th century and later restored and enlarged. Today it is one of the outstanding wine-producing facilities of the Campania region. The Fontanavecchia vineyards extend over an area of 18 hectares in the homonymous district of Torrecuso in the province of Beneventano. The winery is managed by Libero Rillo, with additional experience provided by his father Orazio and his brother Giuseppe.

Professor Attilio Scienza is the one who checks all the facts and regulates when we mistakenly type “Verdicchio” instead of “Vermentino.” He is a full professor at the University of Milan in the Department of Agricultural and Food Sciences where he teaches courses on genetic improvements to the vine; he also teaches Viticulture in the Master’s program of the University of Turin in Asti. 

He has been the lead for many national research projects in the field of physiology, agricultural techniques, and vine genetics. As the author of over 350 publications on vine and viticulture in national and international journals, you can bet he knows his stuff!

Alberto Rivera IWA majored in International Relations and worked as a diplomat in Tokyo, as well as under a United Nations mandate to promote the Sustainable Development Goals within Chihuahua’s regional policies. After the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020, he decided to take his passion for wine tasting to a professional level. He completed the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines and followed his love for Italy by combining these interests as an Italian wine instructor on an online education platform in Mexico.

Last year, he set his sights on earning the title of Italian Wine Ambassador, which he achieved in April 2024. It remains one of the proudest milestones of his wine journey, especially as one of the youngest candidates to pass the exam. Today, he’s a professional wine educator and consultant based in Chihuahua, Mexico.

Stefano Campaniello, born in 1983, is winemaker and owner of Morra Gabriele winery. Raised in Milan with a passion for wine, he spent between 20s to 30s working in France, Spain, and England, immersing himself in vineyards and fine dining restaurants. After further experiences in Italy, Stefano finally achieved his dream of producing his own wine. In 2012, he acquired his first Nebbiolo grapes in Barbaresco, and in 2013, he co-founded Morra Gabriele winery with his friend Gabriele. Starting with small-scale production in his home garage - much to the delight of his neighbors - the winery has grown to produce six labels, totaling around 30,000 bottles. A philosophy of quality over quantity guides Stefano's approach: "Poco e buono" (less is more) is the motto that defines his winemaking ethos."

The Morra Gabriele winery is located in the Piedmont region of Italy, specifically in the Barbaresco and Roero areas, which are part of the famous Langhe hills known for high-quality red wines, such as those made from the Nebbiolo grape. The winery was originally established in 1880 and was formerly known as Pautasso Vini. Today, the winery is run by Gabriele Testa and Stefano Campaniello. Gabriele is known as a typical piemontese farmer who has been working in the vineyards most of his life. Stefano is a sommelier who has spent time working in fine dining restaurants in France, Spain, London and Italy, as well as traveling the European wine regions to understand the secrets of great wines.

Returning to Australia in 2012, he spent 11 years working for the leading Australian Italian wine importer, Trembath and Taylor, where he championed many of Italy’s greatest growers and winemakers. Rocca di Montegrossi is located in the heart of Chianti Classico, in the town of Monti in Chianti, within the municipality of Gaiole in Chianti, Tuscany. The winery is situated near the Romanesque church of San Marcellino, in an area characterized by rolling hills, limestone soils, and an altitude ranging from 340 to 510 meters above sea level. The fortress Rocca di Montegrossi was established by Geremia, founder of the Ricasoli Firidolfi family, during the Longobard period (VII-VIII Centuries AD). It is strategically located, dominating much of Chianti and the Valdarno Superiore, and has had an adventurous, rich, and at times dramatic history.
The estate produces two Chianti Classicos, both based on Sangiovese. To increase the complexity of the wines, two indigenous complementary varietals are added: Canaiolo and Pugnitello. Marco Ricasoli Firidolfi, the current owner, personally oversees all the operations in the vineyards.

They discuss the recent developments on the long-awaited EU–Mercosur trade agreement, aimed at unlocking trade between the EU and South American bloc (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay).

Lamberto Frescobaldi is President of the Italian Wine Union, having been reappointed to the role by the UIV General Assembly on 3 July 2025. Founded in 1895, the union represents over 800 member companies, accounting for 50% of total wine revenue in Italy and more than 85% of Italian wine export revenue. Frescobaldi’s new three-year term begins at a crucial time for the sector, amid global challenges, structural transformations, and the commitment to competitively innovate the entire wine ecosystem. 
Lamberto represents the 30th generation to lead Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi, whose holdings include the prestigious Ornellaia and Masseto estates, as well as various wineries around Tuscany and an estate in Friuli. He studied at Davis in California, the leading university in the world for the wine business, joining the family business in 1989 and taking over as president in 2013.

In a wide-ranging conversation, Richard and Kevin discuss Kevin’s career in wine, the local wine scene in Colorado, the stories behind some of the remarkable Italian winemakers Kevin has encountered, and the challenges of self-publishing, as well as taking a deep dive into some of the “heroic” wine regions featured in Kevin’s book, including Etna. Kevin also explains the thinking behind his choice of Italy’s 100 most compelling wines.

Kevin Day is a wine writer and photographer and the founder of www.openingabottle.com. He has passed the Wine Scholar Guild's Italian Wine Scholar and French Wine Scholar exams, both with Highest Honors. In 2019, he was shortlisted as the "Emerging Wine Writer of the Year" by the Louis Roederer Wine Writers' Awards. He has also been twice nominated for the Millesima Blog Awards in the Wine Reporter category. Opening a Bottle was also nominated for "Best Individual Blog" by the International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP) in 2019, and Kevin was once again acknowledged by the IACP as a Finalist in the Best Narrative Beverage Writing category in 2024. He is a member of the Circle of Wine Writers. He is based in Denver, Colorado, where he conducts his monthly online wine classes with subscribers, and where he lives with his wife, Hailey and two daughters.
