Leigh Kakaty talks new Pop Evil, Mick Mars, and GN'R | Ep. 263

In a first for our show, we had two two frontmen of two different bands (Josh Ross of Black Heart Saints and Aidan Amini of Slaves To Humanity) on the show at the same time and we played music interview tennis.   A volley of music from each band as we deep dived into the music together.   Showing what kind of community music can really be like with the artists.   

With a distinct groove steeped in classic rock and a modern intensity, Black Heart Saints exploded onto the scene with a bravado that is clearly backed by talent. In recent years, the studio singles “Reach the End”, “Lines” and “Misery” topped the Billboard Mainstream Rock Radio Charts, paving the way for appearances at SXSW Festival, Upheaval Festival, Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, and serving as the support act for such national artists as Slash featuring Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators, Sevendust, Steel Panther, Pop Evil, Buckcherry, Dirty Honey, and more.

Inspired by the hard hitting rock of the nineties, Slaves To Humanity seeks to reawaken the spirit of analogue-driven, powerful rock in modern music culture. The Orange County, CA based rock quintet formed primarily out of necessity, when lead vocalist Aidan Amini was scheduled to play at Hollywood’s Whiskey A Go Go. With only a month left before the show, the group finalized their current line up, which includes lead guitarists Pierce Akers and Max Hickman, drummer Shane Ryan, and bassist Nathan Johnson. Following their success at the Whiskey, Slaves To Humanity began playing locally across Orange County, amassing a following on both social media and at their live shows. They have continued to write new material since forming in early March of 2019, fueled primarily by the groups natural chemistry as they pioneer a sound vocalist Aidan Amini calls “Sunset Grunge”. With Slaves to Humanity, one thing remains unmistakably clear, this is not your average high school rock band.

Besides talking about the usual band business, include their new video for “Footsteps” and a string of Canadian tour dates, I wanted to dig into his KINGSTON ONTARIO roots. Yeah, he’s a hoser, born in the city that not only gave us our first Prime Minister, Sir John A., but Gord Downie & Gord Sinclair of The Tragically Hip, Hugh Dillon of The Headstones, Bryan Adams, Bruce Cockburn, Sarah Harmer, Zal Yanovsky of The Lovin’ Spoonful & Bruce McDonald of Kids In The Hall.
