Last week, April 14th, we heard Luke's gospel about Jesus' post- resurrection appearance to the frightened disciples hiding away from the authorities. In Luke's rendering, Jesus calms them, giving his special Peace and assures them he's not a ghost as they thought. In fact, he asks them for something to eat - they give him a piece of broiled fish - further proof he's real.

After Jesus' ascension, the disciples-now-apostles, commissioned by Jesus to go spread the good news of salvation and build the church of God on earth. Exciting, but easier said than done they soon find. Peter & John, filled with the Holy Spirit, in the name of Jesus (not their own) heal a lame beggar. Great news for some but not for the Jewish leadership who feel threatened & worried about this new Jesus movement. Worse, Peter rebukes the Jewish leaders as perpetrators of Jesus' death. His boldness gets them arrested and brought before the Jewish High Council. We're told more than 5,000 men came to faith in Jesus through hearing Peter's teachings and observing the man healed.  Since so many are taking up the faith, the Leadership decides to let then go for now. this skirmish over but there's more to come!
