This lecture discusses the 19th-20th century philosopher and psychologist, William James, and focuses on his essay, "The Will To Believe". Specifically it discusses the relationship between certitude or certainty and truth. James distinguishes two different orientations towards these, which he calls empiricism and absolutism. Absolutism holds that we can attain some absolute certainty, and that we can know with certainty that we know the truth. Empiricism about philosophy notes that there is no criterion for truth about which there has been a consensus.

Contemplating Pragmatism v Absolutism

Richard Shusterman talked about “Philosophy as a Way of Life in Pragmatism” at the "Mapping Philosophy as a Way of Life: Final Conference" that took place between October 16th and 18th, 2024. 

The final conference of the project “Mapping Philosophy as a Way of Life: An Ancient Model, A Contemporary Approach” brought together team members, consultants, and collaborators of the project in order to present the most significant results achieved in the last two years. In line with the project’s main objective, the conference mapped the vibrant and multifaceted field of philosophy as a way of life (PWL) and presented for the first time the main contents of the upcoming Oxford Handbook of Philosophy as a Way of Life. In doing so, it aimed to provide an up-to-date overview of the leading research trends in the field while also discussing new avenues of inquiry, use, and application of PWL.
