Community Curators (Feat: DJ Tara)

To celebrate Pride Month, Thom Francis shines the spotlight three incredible local LGBT poets and their work – Elizabeth Gordon, Nancy Klepsch, and Tim Verhaegen.

Pride Month is dedicated to celebrating and commemorating lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) pride. Pride Month began after the Stonewall riots, a series of gay liberation protests in 1969, and has since spread worldwide. Modern-day Pride Month both honors the movement for LGBT rights and celebrates LGBT culture.

The first poet up is Elizabeth Gordon who read her poem "The 12th Round" at the Brass Tacks poetry and spoken word open mic on August 21, 2018 at The Low Beat. 

We then hear from poet, open mic host, and retired educator Nancy Klepsch. She read her poem “We All Pray for Different Reasons" at the Up The River journal launch on April 12, 2015 at McGeary’s. 

Our final poet this week is Tim Verhaegen reading his piece "Swans" when he was the featured reader at the Poets Speak Loud series on Monday, October 26, 2015.

They are the author of Larks (OUP, 2025), winner of the 2024 Hollis Summers Poetry Prize, the chapbook Hawk & Moon (Bottlecap Press, 2025), and What Pecan Light (Bull City Press, 2021), and have essays and poetry published in Poetry Daily, The Boston Globe, Kenyon Review, The American Poetry Review, Poetry Foundation, Poetry Northwest, Poet Lore, AGNI, and elsewhere. Han hosts Of Poetry Podcast and, alongside Amorak Huey, co-edits the poetry press River River Books.

From 2014:  When it comes to competitive diving, four-time Olympic champion Greg Louganis is one of the world's greatest. In 2011, struggling financially thanks to a bad business partner, Louganis faced the challenges of being a gay man (and HIV+) and ultimately, a leader for the next generations. We are joined by the man himself on behalf of the documentary, BACK ON BOARD: GREG LOUGANIS.  

When drag queens start disappearing, a shy young barista must summon his inner "shero" to rescue them from an ambitious evil drag queen bent on harvesting their magical anti-aging tears. Stand back-- here comes MAXXIE LaWOW: DRAG SUPER-SHERO (in her own animated musical) and its director/ co-writer Anthony Hand!  

From 2023:  A lonely screenwriter encounters a neighbor one night in their near-empty London apartment block and get together. As a relationship develops, the writer wrestles with memories of his past and is drawn back to his childhood home which appears to be inhabited by his parents, looking exactly the same as the day they died. ALL OF US STRANGERS is the film and we sit down with writer/director Andrew Haigh.

light gal is a rising star of London’s house and techno scene. Drawing influence from such labels as Terminal M, Kraftek, Drumcode, Spinnin’ Deep and Defected, as well listing DJs like Daniel Avery, Enrico Sangiuliano, ANNA and Sam Divine as some of her many inspirations, light gal creates unique and exploratory sets ranging from vocal soulful house to dark and melodic techno. Based in North London, she is quickly emerging as a talent to watch, with appearances at across Ibiza, Ministry of Sound, Factory 45, Always the Sun Festival, and performing alongside such legends as Hernan Cattaneo, Darren Emerson, and Danny Howells.

Born in Surrey, one of her first introductions to dance music was during primary school, listening to compilations of Ibiza summer hits. She attended Reigate College, whose alumni include Disclosure and Fatboy Slim, and went on to study a Masters degree at the University of Bristol in Maths and Computer Science. It was here that her passion for the music was truly cemented, becoming a frequent visitor to legendary Bristol venues like Lakota, Motion, and Dojo Nightclub. After her studies, she moved back to Surrey, concentrating on her craft while working at the Academy of Contemporary Music.

She was first drawn to dance music through early underground dubstep from the likes of artists such as Plastician and Rusko. When the genre began to die down it opened her eyes to different sounds and styles, particularly house and techno. “The thing I love about the style of house I play is that everyone can be happy and dance along even if they don’t know the songs - it’s that sort of vibe. But with techno though, it’s the opposite. Dark, cold, industrial, yet melodic - but still stuff you can dance to!”

Light Gal kick-started her DJ career by performing in Ibiza over the Summer of 2017. During her time on the island, she performed at Ibiza Rocks and Hush nightclub, and was so well-received that she was invited back the following year. Since then, she has been busy - performing across London and establishing her own event ‘Minority Influence,’ which hopes to disprove the opinions and biases of people who consider the house and techno scene to be exclusively white and male, and looks forward to organising its next instalment soon. Between gigs, Light gal is currently curating DERILIKT Techno - a series of dark and melodic mixes, and the bi-annual Pure House Anthems, packed with UK House dance floor fillers.

Keia and Jade are two happy and hard working (Blackity) Black Women who are just trying to learn how to adult, for real.
