The celebration of our season and John Adams’ 70th birthday continues with Music Director Robert Spano conducting Adams’ The Chairman Dances and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5. Pianist Pedja Muzijevic, whom the London Financial Times called “a virtuoso with formidable fingers and a musician with fiercely original ideas about the music he plays,” presents Mozart’s royal Piano Concerto No. 22.

James Gaffigan, "a talented force to be reckoned with" (The Examiner), conducts the world premiere of Australian composer Carl Vine's trombone concerto Five Hallucinations. CSO trombonist Michael Mulcahy, who hails from Sydney, Australia, performs this special co-commission by the CSO and Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Gaffigan also leads Prokofiev's interpretation of the enchanting fairy tale Cinderella.

Gil Shaham, one of today's pre-eminent violinists and "a virtuoso of deeply intense sincerity" (The New York Times), performs Mendelssohn's enchanting and well-loved concerto. An acclaimed interpreter of Sibelius, Finnish conductor John Storgårds makes his CSO debut leading the composer's first symphonic masterpiece.

He makes his Orchestra Hall podium debut performing and conducting Beethoven's lyrical Violin Concerto and Shostakovich's landmark Symphony No. 5.

A centennial celebration of musical icon Leonard Bernstein continues with Kent Nagano conducting one of his most profound compositions, The Age of Anxiety Symphony. A jazzy, concerto-like work inspired by a poem written by W.H. Auden, it tells the story of four strangers in a New York bar who connect through a shared search for the meaning of life. The evening closes with Schumann's First Symphony, a joyous celebration of spring.

Matthias Pintscher makes his CSO podium debut in a sensuous all-Ravel program. Rarely performed in its entirety, the lush and romantically yearning Daphnis and Chloe is one of Ravel’s most ravishing scores. The concert also includes Ravel’s inventive orchestration of Debussy's Sarabande and Danse, along with Ravel's dark and powerful Concerto for the Left Hand, performed by French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet. “Thibaudet is an artist of dazzling technique and passion” (The Straits Times).
