Each verse is a practice for another sound. Have fun! 

I’ve got the short vowel blues
Maybe you do too
(be)cause short vowel sounds in English
Show up in everything we do. 

With the short A sound (ae ae ae ae)
I can laugh at the fact 
That my dad never traveled, 
he was bad at maps.
After Grandma passed 
they found a basket full of maps
And at the back 
of the basket 
was a handwritten letter for me.

With the short e sound (eh eh eh eh)
I read the letter 
The letter said
intend to be better.
Grandma begged me to pledge
to never ever, ever let 
My inherited sense of direction 
prevent me from getting 
anywhere

So with the short i sound (ih ih ih ih)
since I was a little kid
I envisioned a big trip
With a wish to visit
big international cities 
And distant hills with villages 
Where I imagined that children 
were living a little bit differently 
than little me.	

Short a says ae - ae, ae - ae, ae
short e says eh - eh, eh - eh, eh
short i says ih - ih, ih
short o says ah - ah, ah
short u says uh - uh, uh, uh

Well, with the short o sound, (ah ah ah ah)
I got lost a lot
I was my father’s daughter
mom was often distraught.
Later on I thought I ought 
to become an astronaut
(be)cause all the onboard maps 
would probably all be 
automatic.

So with the short u sound (uh uh uh uh)
Up and up I’ve come, 
In a space shuttle now stuck somewhere
Somewhere above the sun. 
There was fun navigation 
Then suddenly there was none. 
Cuz I dumped my cup of rum 
and mucked up the shuttle communications 

I hope grandma’s not sad (ae ae ae ae ae)
I kept my pledge (eh eh eh eh eh)
It’s been a little bit different (ih ih ih ih ih)
Than she probably thought (ah ah ah ah ah)
Now I’m wondering what I’m gonna do for fun (uh uh uh uh)

David Kluge is interviewed by JALTCALL Podcast host Brian Gallagher. David Kluge was one of the founding members of the group that became the JALTCALL SIG  and has taught English for over forty years, 32 of them at the university level. He has co-authored three books, two for National Geographic Learning/Cengage Learning and one for Macmillan Learning. His current areas of interest are readers theatre, oral interpretation, speech, presentation, drama, debate, oral communication, composition, cooperative learning, and materials writing.
In the interview, we discuss learning opportunities with technology over the years from early word-processing computer labs and early phone technologies. With a focus on creativity in academia, David explains how he created and curated courses with several elements that required student personalization and input. From cliffhangers to digital scrapbooks, from roleplays to divergent models, the ideas and answers flow from this very talented teacher.

This month Geoff Carr and Brian Gallagher talk about "Applied Classroom AI". We explore include some ideas for teachers who are new to the AI scene and want some easy tips to implement AI into their classroom activities and we also suggest some tools that will hopefully make that easy to do for everyone. Geoff explains Judy Wang and John Gayed's Automated Writing Evaluation project and his own "Help Me Improve My Diary Writing Chatty" narrowly-focused chatbot. In section 2 we highlight some current goings on in Education around the world and some ideas on professional development that are happening in the United States, specifically the Play Approach, the DIY PD Approach, and Magic School .
