If someone was to tell me back in 1987, when Karten Obarski released his groundbreaking 4 channel 8-sample based Ultimate Soundtracker program for the Amiga, that one day it would be possible to play back the very same music modules on a single 8-bit embedded processor chip running off a coin cell costing $5 using a playroutine written in C my jaw would have hit the floor.. but here we are now in 2023 and, thanks to Jarkko Lempiainen's nifty embedded AVR playroutine, this is exactly what is playing on my bench in the workshop!

This is literally nothing but an 8-bit ATmega328P running at 16MHz and a bunch of resistors making up a 1R-2R DAC.. and it doesn't even sound at all bad.. TBH I'm pretty surprised.

If this same circuit was in surface mount it would literally be the size of the coin cell powering it... heck you could practically build this thing into greetings cards.

The only downside is that the ATmega328P only has 32K of FLASH so you have to be a bit selective with the modules you can run on this thing.. but still.

To celebrate I had some fun porting one of my own music modules over to it that I wrote way back in the early 90s for a game called !Phaethon on the Acorn Archimedes under the guise of BrokenARM Music.

Simen Lysebo (Jam/TMH) - Gorg

This is an entire album of 7 tracks, all made in a month and a half. All of them total almost 25 minutes of music, and almost all of them are different genres! Classical, Rap, Metal (kinda), some sort of Reggae? (I don't know XD). This was done to see how much music i could fit into the 128 patterns I could use in an Amiga Protracker II module.  I wanted to make as much different music I could make from using the limit of only 31 samples, and it called for some heavy creativity, from making some sounds mimic other sounds while using it to make up part of the music (if that makes sense) and it definitely took over 14 HOURS to do all of this. By the time i got to the last piece of music I knew I had to use the piano sound which was the 2nd sample i put in the module. You can definitely hear some familiar sounds when listening to all of these, and each one may be used in a game hopefully. If you do for some reason want any of these in a retro -sytle game or something, honestly be my guest, I'm proud of these. Every fadeout, echo, phaser, etc. had to be done completely by hand, as no VSTs exist for ProTracker II files, or any tracker music except for Renoise. but these can played on an AMIGA. That thing says "Nahh, i don't know what that is." An album with 4 channels? Up to 4 sounds at once? No higher than that? Daym.  Making music with only a few hundred dollars worth of hardware. No studio equipment, nothing but a computer. This is meant to be a demonstration of what could be done on it back then, after studying this for some years now. The classical piece at the end had 3 channels , and there were no chorded piano samples, so the most keys you can hear at any time "being pressed down" would be 3. That meant I had to be Mozart or somebody for about 20 minutes. It was fun though. 
Anyway, enough of my ramble. You better be listening while reading this.
One more thing, don't be fooled by Impulse Tracker being used for the picture. The file I have for this only works correctly in OpenMPT as far as i know.

Having undertaken several major restorations and produced custom electronic designs for a number of major artists including Jean-Michel Jarre, Dani is also known for fully restoring two out of the world's four remaining 1979 Crumar GDS and partially restoring 1938 Novachord 346 (the only known operational Novachord in the UK) to playable order along with developing and producing the popular MIDI Front Panel Animator (FPA), Filter Defeat Module (FDM) and XD-280 Drive Emulator upgrades for the AKAI S612 sampler.
