The most recent in our series of ‘In the City’ debates took place at The Society Building, London, on Tuesday 1 October 2024. To kick off the Autumn / Winter programme, we considered ‘Culture in the City’.

Culture gives a city and its communities a sense of place, character and identity. The spaces that support culture are a key part of developing social infrastructure, helping people to connect with one another and their wider shared history. London has a global reputation for outstanding cultural institutions but these tend to be centred around established areas. What happens when we create new neighbourhoods? How can we ensure that these burgeoning communities also benefit from their own, meaningful spaces and creative organisations?

Our amazing panel explored these questions and more.

Gathering in the City: The spaces that help us come together

The most recent in our series of ‘In the City’ debates took place at The Society Building, London, on Tuesday 3 December 2024. In the last event of the year, we considered ‘Gathering in the City’.

We are wired to be social; we crave connection and thrive on forming relationships. Perhaps more traditionally taking place in, for example, cafés, parks and libraries, we are now seeing a growing number of spaces for social gathering located within other types of buildings.

In offices, universities and schools, in our cultural institutions and even in apartment buildings, there is a growing desire to create loose fit spaces where occupants of the building can gather informally and do more-or-less whatever they want, for free!

These spaces are often expensive to fit out and do not generate a rentable income so why are we seeing an increasing number of these “Third Spaces” appear in buildings across London?
